In this assignment the author is going to be speaking about active listening and the components of active listening. Active listening is a skill that is very important when it comes to communication and the author will discuss its importance and also how it can be achieved. It is important that active listening is being used so that the patient feels comfortable talking to you, if they see that you are in another world or if they cannot gain eye contact with you they will feel that they cannot trust you and may feel the need to not speak about their feelings. There are many different forms of communication these include visual, verbal and non-verbal. It is important that people take a look at their own communication skills and how these can be improved. Communication allows us to see things from another point of view; therefore one can get rid of any personal biases. Listening is a gift that should be appreciated, it lets people know what is going on around them in their society, such as people’s problems and struggles. It is not until people start to listen to someone that they will be able to understand that person. Then this enables people to offer support and advice. This paper will explain the seven principles of patient-clinician communication. It will then apply three of those principles to my interactions with my patients. Next, it will describe three methods being used in my area of practice to improved communication between the patients and clinicians. It will ultimately choose one of those principles that applies best to my practice and clearly describe how I use it. It will describe ethical principles that can be applied to issues with patient-clinician communication.
This means to listen to what someone is saying to you, not only to hear the words, but to hear the message behind it (Porritt 1984.) An example of this is a nurse trying to find out why a patient is behaving aggressively. For a nurse who is not participating in active listening, they may brush it off as the person’s personality, ‘Oh look Mr Brown is being unpleasant to the nurses again’. Whereas a nurse who is participating in active listening may come to the conclusion that he is behaving this way out of anxiety about an upcoming procedure. Research also shows that by using reflective listening techniques it can improve a patient’s satisfaction, as they are more likely to feel supported by the practitioner (Pollak et al. 2011.)
Occupational Therapy is a health care profession in which we facilitate maximal independence and quality of life throughout the lifespan. As an Occupational Therapy Assistant Student, I want to be able to make the difference in the individual life to reach the patients goals and helping them back to be independent as possible. “The mission of the University of Charleston is to educate each and every student to their life of productive work, enlightened living and the community involvement.” (The University of Charleston, 2017). The patients I have worked with have become my greatest teachers. I can’t sit down and flip to a chapter in a textbook that would teach me how to listen to a patient and let their unique history paint the picture of their present illness. A physician that I shadowed told me something that has since resonated with me. She told me how every patient has a story, and you always need to listen carefully because these stories aren’t pointless, they often can lead to your diagnosis. I personally believe the most important member of the care team is the patient; without communicating with the patient there is no chance to obtain crucial insight as to the illness that is presented to you.
In the words of M Scott Peck, “By far the most important form of attention we can give our loved ones is listening… True listening is love in action.” The importance of listening to what others have to say is great deal, it is one of the most common ways humans interact with one another. Communication is an inevitable aspect of life. It is an event which happens almost every second of every day. Communication is an act of giving and receiving of information—desires, needs, perceptions, knowledge, etc.—of two or more persons through orthodox or unorthodox methods which can either be intentional or unintentional (de Valenzuela 2002). There are numerous types of communication and one is interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication is one of the communication fields that several studies have focused on.
She must understand the doctor's instructions and the patient's concerns. Her communications skills focus on both giving and receiving information as well as creating an environment of confidence. Some consequences of ineffective communication can be chaos, confusion, disorder, fear, conflict, inefficient systems, and wasted resources (Vertino, 2014). Cournoyer in his book "The Social Work Skills Workbook," active listening involves the combination of talking and listening skills to show clients that you are an active and collaborative participant in treatment and helps convey empathy for your client's problem or situation. During active listening, you use mirroring techniques to paraphrase and reflect back to a client what he or she has just said. . (Miller, 2015) Before I did the interview I usually cut into someone’s statement and then they could not complete what they were saying. Some of this was evident in my interview and so next time I will have to try and ensure that the client is finish speaking or ask if they were finish speaking so has to show that I was actively listen.
I think that perception checks are helpful to guide how the conversation will proceed, and this is why I decided to use this skill right at the beginning of the interaction. Following this, I asked the patient if it was acceptable for me to sit next to her and discuss the matter with her. This question, in addition to using the patients name in the beginning of the interaction helped to build trust. I think that without building this trust as a foundation, the conversation is bound to be unproductive. Throughout the conversation, I tried to ask clarifying questions when I was unsure of my interpretation of what was being said.

The learner believes that there are four major signs that make us human; the need to love, the need to be loved, the need to be accepted and the need to be respected as an individual. These skills are not only applicable in the counselling setting to form therapeutic relationship; they are also essential in daily life to convey information in a healthier way instead of finger pointing and blaming others, especially during conflict. To illustrate, the practice of “I” statements were especially useful in expressing my discomfort due to someone’s behaviour since it allowed me to convey my discomfort clearly while reducing the defensiveness of the person. Besides that, I used to have superficial relationship with others as I avoided touching on people’s inner feelings due to my fear of not providing any constructive feedback to resolve their issues.
