In order to survive our adversities some of us need survival factors. For instance, Salva Dut from “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park needed survival factors in order to survive his adversities. This book is nonfiction and explains the story of Salva Dut-Ariik and what he did to survive. Salva used many survival factors such as bravery, hope and determination.
The determination to live comes from human nature. But the urge of giving up when we come across a difficult problem is also a part of human nature. There a few people in this world that have the characteristics of resilience. As author Kendra Cherry describes them, "People that are able to keep their cool have what psychologists call resilience, or an ability to cope with problems and setbacks" (Source A; Cherry, 1). An example of someone who has the characteristics of resilience is a bombardier name Louis (Louie) Zamperini. After Louie’s plane crashed in the middle of the ocean, he and two other survivors had to overcome a series of conflicts before they could make it to safety. Throughout Laura Hillenbrand's book, "Unbroken", Louie’s most important characteristic of resilience that contributed to his survival was his awareness. With his awareness of his surroundings and situation, Louie was able to overcome the conflicts he faced such as shark attacks, dehydration, and starvation.
“A long time ago, my ancestor Paikea came to this place on the back of a whale. Since then, in every generation of my family, the first born son has carried his name and become the leader of our tribe... until now” (Caro & Sanders, 2003). Whale Rider is the story of a girl, Pai, whose twin brother and mother die in child birth. Koro, Pai’s grandfather and leader of the Maori tribe, is devastated that their future leader has died. Years later Koro is determined to find a leader and begins to teach and train the boys, in which Pai is not allowed to join because she is a girl. In a final test Koro throws a sacred whale tooth in the ocean but the boys cannot retrieve it. Later, Pai dives for the tooth and is successful, proving her right as leader.
t get afraid. Courage means you don\\\'t let fear stop you”-Bethany Hamilton this quote represents people in war they are always afraid but it never stops them. Courage of the Fallen Angels For some people in war they they just follow and for some people they are the leaders but some are the ones that see their buddy fall right next to them and are to scared to run back and save him they just follow. But for the people that show courage the ones that doesn\\\'t let fear stop them they are the heroes the ones that take more risks to save a buddy from being killed. In the book Fallen Angels Peewee shows that kind of courage. The book never said peewee was drafted it said he enlisted himself because “this Is the first place I ever been in my life where I got what everybody else got”(Myers 15) this shows courage because he doesn\\\'t let fear defeat him and he wants to be equal with everyone and kind of prove himself to everyone else That he is just as good and during the war, especially at the end both peewee and perry show courage by climbing out of the spider hole finding Monaco surrounded by Congs waiting for a chopper to come so they can kill as many
Many situations in life make your mind set stronger in difficult challenges. Having hope for the better can make a person stronger to achieve for the best. Showing bravery , hope and courage had helped Amari get freedom that she desired. Expressing the history in the book shows challenges that people had gone through in the past.
In our life, we often have experiences that teach us how and what we want to be like when we grow up. Everyone has ups and downs from time to time that make one want to stop and other times make one want to run while individually they feel free. The Garden Story by Katherine Mansfield and The First Born Son by Ernest Buckler both show how parental pressure, social pressure, and family pressure around an individual can influence the way one will treat others. Once in a while it is an advantage when they want to change the world to make it better for others, but oftentimes it is for the worse because they personally accept the problems they have and never trying to fix them. Both stories have parental influences that want them to stay as they are, tradition influences that professions stay in the family, and they are always compared to the better child that is more like by parents.
Challenges in life are inevitable. Whether they are external or internal, they can have a significant impact on the individual. Therefore, one should be thoughtful of his or her response to the challenges he or she is encountering. This idea of one managing to respond to challenges in a myriad of ways is often explored in literature. In the short story "Wing's Chips," Mavis Gallant makes powerful use of character development to suggest that when one is faced with challenges, one may respond with acts of ambition, or one may respond with acts of doubt and insecurity.
To me the main messages of the article is to use love and non-violence to get your point across and/or when you are trying to get what you want. That you do not have to always fight fire with fire. You can see this throughout the interview while John Lewis talked about how to prepare for their protest or marches they would practice being talked down, spit on, being beaten. That through the practiced they learned not to fight back but show the people who were doing these horrible things to them love. Throughout the interview he would mention studying Gandhi’s peaceful protest tactics and using them while they were doing their own protests.
“Survival can be summed up in three words- never give up. That’s the heart of it really. Just keep trying,” (Bear Grylls). People go through many hardships in life that set them back, whether it is emotionally or physically. Sometimes they may give or other times they may keep fighting. The indigenous people of the stolen generations time period fought for the things they wanted and eventually they won. However, in the story of Omayra Sanchez, the young thirteen year old girl fought hard to escape the debris she was trapped under but could no longer fight and let go. Human life is a fight for survival, the fight to overcome an obstacle preventing one from existing.
Abraham Lincoln once stated, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” One key term in Lincoln’s statement is adversity, which means a state or instance of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune. Another important term in Lincoln’s statement is character, which means the complex mental and ethical traits we use to mark and individualize a person. Taken as a whole, Lincoln means that almost everyone can handle a tough situation, but if you want to see their true character or person, you can test them by giving them power. Furthermore, Lincoln implies in his statement that you could be a strong person (or claim to be), however, when given a taste of power or in this case, reign over
“Perseverance isn’t one long race; it is many short races one after the other.” - Walter Elliot. When someone is facing their idea of impossible, they must overcome many small bumps in the road and when they get over that small bump it can make them believe in themselves and make them stronger as a person. But perseverance can be well worth it in the end. Through determination, we can learn why perseverance is essential to making us stronger both mentally and emotionally, but we can’t just understand why but also how perseverance help in making us the strongest people we can be. However being persistent not only affects us as individuals but it also affects our communities and the society we live in. At the end of the day perseverance one
The meaning of courage is when one has the mindset that enables them to face fear, difficulty, pain, or danger. Courage or bravery can come out in a person for a number of reasons. When people think of someone as “courageous” they usually think that they have done a huge deed for someone or really made a difference when, in actuality, it sometimes takes a courageous person to profess their love or even admit that they were wrong about something. Most of the efforts made by someone usually require a certain amount of courage. Fear, following one’s heart, standing up for what is right, and facing suffering with dignity and faith all require courage.
