As we have learnt in previous sections logistics is linked to the movement of goods. The logistics part of the supply chain consist of two components which is vitally important in the context of the bigger picture supply chain namely warehousing and transport.
• Warehousing or Storage: Warehousing played a role in the storage and exchange of goods for centuries. Long-term storage to provide product for future use in production or distribution has been a utility of warehousing for many years. Transit warehouses, warehouses connected to a port, facilitate the movement and storage of goods being loaded or un-loaded from shipping vessels supplying international trade. Ocean Freight or Ocean Transport plays an important role in international freight. It can provide a cheap and high carrying capacity mode of transport for customers. Therefore, it has a vital position in the transportation of particular goods, such as crude oil and grains. Its disadvantage is that it needs longer transport time and its schedule is strongly affected by the weather factors. To save costs and enhance competitiveness, current maritime logistics firms tend to use large-scaled ships and cooperative operation techniques. Moreover, current ocean freight customers care about service quality more than the delivery price. Road freight transport has advantages as cheaper investment funds, high accessibility, mobility and availability. Its disadvantages are low capacity, lower safety, and slow speed. The advantages of pipeline transport are high capacity, less effect by weather conditions, cheaper operation fee, and continuous conveyance; the disadvantages are expensive infrastructures, harder supervision, goods specialization, and regular maintenance needs.
