ASSESSMENT AND ITS IMPORTANCE Assessment
Assessment can be defined as the systematic collection of information about student learning, using the time, knowledge, expertise, and resources available, in order to inform decision about how to improve learning.
Term assessment is used to describe the tests,surveys and exams. It aims at the continuing improvement of student development. The purpose of assessment is to provide information on student achievement and progress and set the direction for ongoing teaching and learning.

In reviewing these results, the teacher must first consider the quality of the item or criterion. Perhaps the question is ambiguously worded or the criterion is unclear. Perhaps students mis-interpreted the question. Whatever the case, teachers must determine whether these items adequately address the knowledge, understanding, or skill that they were intended to measure.

Absence of assessment in classroom
Teaching cannot proceed nor can it be fully understood without assessment. It is questionable that teaching has occurred if learning does not result. Improved learning should be the primary purpose behind assessment and teaching. Assessment should be informed by the needs, ends, and processes of teaching and learning. Assessing learning alone is not sufficient because the ultimate success of students is also dependent upon their motivation and commitment to learning. Similarly, assessing only teaching behaviors and course activities is not sufficient because qualities of the instructor may be appreciated by students but not optimally helpful to their learning and growth.
