Bacteria are unicellular prokaryotes that lack a nucleus and organelles, but they do have cell walls that contain peptidoglycan. Most bacterias are helpful and beneficial to the environment as well as to many other organisms, living in a mutualistic relationship, a close relationship in which, at most, both species will benefit. But a small number of bacteria can be pathogenic, bacteria that cause diseases, therefore harming other organisms. This trend leads to a thought that all bacteria are harmful and are disease-causing, but in many ways, there are a majority of bacteria that proves to be beneficial and that only a small percentage of 1% are hazardous. In order for the development for life, bacteria can be decomposers that break down nutrients in dead matter and wastes of other organisms and are able to make it available for other organisms to use, therefore recycling nutrients and so maintaining an equilibrium in an ecosystem. They are also used in sewage treatments in breaking down complex compounds into simpler compounds that are less harmful. Another form of their favourable roles is as nitrogen fixers, which converts nitrogen in the atmosphere into nitrogen compounds that plants are able to use, helping them in growth and development. These bacterias are significantly important in contributing to the nitrogen cycle as well as are fertilizing plants, they are mainly found in the root nodules of legumes aiding them in growth. Many of which live in a mutualistic relationship with other species, both aiding in each others survival, a common example would be the E.coli in our intestines which aid us in digestion and in numerous amounts of vitamins that our body cannot produce, and in return, we would provide them with a warm and safe space, plenty of food and a source of transportation. Some bacteria are used in producing our foods, such as Lactobacillus which are in our dairy products and makes the cheeses and yogurt that we eat and some bacteria can create our medicine, such as our vaccines. Another role would be as fermenters, these types of bacteria are very useful in making vinegar and wine, by releasing the energy of food without the presence of oxygen. A few human uses of bacteria would be their role in digesting petroleum, which is very beneficial in oil spills, they are also used for the removal of waste and poison from water and can help in mining minerals and concentrating the minerals in ores to obtaining them easier.
