All these observations point towards the fact that Bollywood cinema-goers are an active audience. The people react immediately to specific elements in the film, at certain junctures. There is audience involvement as viewers clap, laugh, take sides and even engage in deep discussions about certain aspects of the film. Srinivas (2002) describes this as participatory viewing, as the audience does not just passively consume what is presented to them, but rather each viewer takes the film and makes it his/her own by reacting and responding differently and to varying extents. This sort of participatory viewing also makes the experience of watching the movie in the theatre more engaging for all. Personally for me, watching a Bollywood movie in Singapore …show more content…
Firstly, the film itself acts as a source of connection to India for the diasporic audience. It allows people to know about the recent happenings, back in their homeland. It also reminds them of the familiar sights and sounds of the home, which they left behind. Beyond the film, the space, setting and atmosphere at the movie theatre, facilitate the formation of an Indian cultural identity. Going to the theatre to watch a Bollywood film also means, meeting fellow Indians. On top of the group that one is going with, for example family or Indian friends, there are also other Indians in the movie theatre. Bollywood cinema-going brings people together and becomes a reason for Indians to gather in a single space. Like I mentioned earlier, there were so many Indians congregating in the foyer of the movie theatre that it did not even feel like a place in Singapore anymore. This close proximity with many fellow Indians helps one reassert his/her Indian identity. Moreover, the unique characteristic of participatory viewing, among the Indian audience, helps build a community in the process of watching a film. The communal experience of watching and enjoying a Hindi film, together with many other Indians, enhances one’s own feeling of being an Indian. On the whole, while the film and its content help to maintain Indian cultural identity among the people, the gathering of Indians and …show more content…
Definitely the movie viewers in Singapore were also active, as they laughed, clapped and discussed about the movie. However, the reactions came with a little bit of hesitation. According to Srinivas (2002), the cinema-goers in India shout out responses to onscreen dialogues and even loudly repeat the “punch-line” in the film. The viewers in India tend to be more expressive and have no inhibitions when they react to features in the film. However, in Singapore, the expressions are more subdued. When people laugh or talk, they do so softly and quietly, trying to be “considerate” to other viewers in the cinema hall. Moreover, in India, audience movement during the film is much greater. During the film, the viewers get up and go outside if they are uninterested during song and dance sequences and take their restless children outside (Srinivas, 2002). There is also an intermission, which is a 10-15 minutes break, at the half-way mark of the film. At this time, some people leave the cinema hall to go get a drink or snack. In Singapore, there was no intermission. Furthermore, throughout the entire course of the film barely anyone left their seats. There seemed to be some sort of compulsion among the audience to avoid unnecessary movement, while watching the Bollywood film. Vandevelde, Meers, Van Bauwel, & Winkel (2015) have described this as the “enthusiasm

Give My Regards to Broadway Music brings culture to everyday life, it can be found anywhere at anytime. Music doesn’t have to actually be playing for people to hear it. The rhythm of the city is music in itself, everybody has their own unique sound and way to add into the beat of the city. Music expands in many different ways such as country music, which has it’s own unique sound. Country music can be slow with a love story, fast with a break up story to it, or it could be a moderate speed about a big purple dinosaur.
The film, Reel Injun reveals a distortion of the way Hollywood sees Native American life through comedy and the real way Native Americans live which changes according to the current times. Neil Diamond sets out on a journey across America to figure out where the incorrect image of Natives arose from, all signs pointing towards Hollywood. Dozens of films recreate the way Americans believe Natives live as savages and wear costumes and decorated headpieces with feathers, but Hollywood does not show the true spiritual side and the meaning of why they live the way they do as true to their own culture and assimilated to the American culture as well. US history negatively affects Native American live which lead to the image of Natives to be clouded by imagination through film, changed the way Natives viewed themselves and expect to live, and misshaped the view we now have for Natives.
The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women.
Movies and dramas are some of the artistic innovations of the human beings. They remind us of the traditional beliefs, customs and the way of life. TV dramas, for instance, are one way of teaching people about their past using an entertaining approach where characters take different roles symbolically to pass a message to the audience. Movies however, make scenes vivid and emotional as they bring a clear picture of what happened using moving images. That said, movies make it easy for one to remember, especially on parts that they find interesting or scarring.
By the utilization of this technique, the film’s mise-en-scene brings the audience’s attention to the space as a sort of institution of relaxation, in times of

Student’s Name Professor’s Name Subject DD MM YYYY SANKOFA – CRITICAL REVIEW Sankofa, a movie by Haile Gerima revolves around the horrors of slavery, revealing the humiliating and torturous experiences people from the African Diaspora had to go through during the Atlantic slave trade period. A film based in Ghana, where the slave trade was rampant for centuries, it highlights the savagery of white people and how internalized the oppression was for the Africans through poetic descriptions of complacency and fear.
Over the past century, film has served as a powerful means of communication to a global audience and has become a vital part of the contemporary culture in a world that is increasingly saturated by visual content. Due to the immediacy and the all-encompassing nature of film, the process of watching a film, is widely perceived to be a passive activity by the general masses. However, quoting Smith in his article about the study of film, “nothing could be further from the truth.” The study and understanding of film as an art form enhances the way we watch and appreciate films. It requires the audience's active participation and interaction with the film in order to fully comprehend the directors' intention behind every creative decision.
“Learning about stereotypes, ethnocentrism, discrimination, and acculturation in the abstract can be flat and uninspiring. But if we experience intercultural contact with our own eyes and ears, we begin to understand it” (Summerfield, 1993). In other words, in order to expand knowledge about different cultural backgrounds, it is useful to have firsthand experiences. Films are enormous cultural treasures for us to have visual and auditory experiences and facilitate intercultural learning. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” (2002) is a ideal film to obtain knowledge of a lot in term of intercultural communication, in particularly, individualism/collectivism, communication style and power distance.
This film not only gives us knowledge in cultures but provides us with relaxed moments. People should bear in mind that cultural difference is just the matter of variety, not the matter of which one is
There is no doubt that Hollywood has many influences on society especially on young age. The term “Hollywood” refers to the film industry where located to the west and northwest of downtown Los Angeles, California (“Where is Hollywood,” n.d.). Hollywood movies affect national culture in various ways. In one sense, movies could be characterized as America’s storytellers. Hollywood movies „Americanize“ global values and beliefs ,therefore they in a way diminish national culture traits and adapt and reinforce American customs. People tend to copy the ideas, customs and culture of American people or in other words they tend to acculturate. So called „Americanization“ is
