Avoid slang - do not use ‘yep’ in place of ‘yes’ or ‘kay’ in place of ‘alright’. We also recommend stopping the use of ‘texting’ language - they are so rampant in mobile phone usage, email and in Facebook. Whilst the abbreviations and content may be the ‘in thing’, it does nothing to improve one’s grammar or speech eloquence. - Use effective language. This has been dealt with in Chapter 2. There is a much smoother and eloquent flow when we speak in simple words and sentences. There is also a big difference between sounding articulate and trying to sound educated. Complex words make us sound educated but using simple, easy to understand words makes us articulate. - Apply the principle of brevity in your delivery. “Brevity is …show more content…
They contribute not only to substance but also enable the speaker to create a good impression of what polished eloquence is all about. - Practice. There is no substitute for this. It builds both our eloquence and confidence. Patience must accompany practice. Developing speaking eloquence is a process - we will get there in time. Our delivery skills are best judged by the standard of our speaking eloquence. We have all the means available to learn from the best and reach that level of excellence we see in them. It is hard work but as Zig Ziglar puts it: “Success comes from the glands - the sweat glands.” 120 Summary • Eloquence is simply having a skilful way with words. • Well-structured speeches and presentation material must be matched with eloquence in delivery. • We need to first build on our speech fundamentals - vowel sounds, correct use of stress, rhythm, voice modulation and pronunciation. • Developing eloquence revolves around nurturing the right mindset, broadening our knowledge and exposure, improving articulation skills with constant practice. • There is a variety of means available for us to develop speaking
When it comes to making the audience feel the same emotions as the speaker, one must be able to use words that add emotional emphasis.
Focusing on delivery and rhetoric will produce a good speech, but incorporating ethos, pathos, and logos will unequivocally construct a speech that no one can be at odds with. Henry’s speech appropriately integrates ethos, pathos, and logos. Henry’s entire speech employs ethos. Since he is the king, he should be an expert at taking care of his men, and he should know how to lead men into battle using whatever technological advantages he can provide (Shakespeare).
Devices other that pathos, ethos, and logos are used to make the speech impressive, such as, rhetorical
In addition to the rhetorical strategies discussed above, other factors contribute to the success of Sachs and Gilbert's talks. One of these factors is their delivery style. Sachs delivers his talk in a calm and composed manner, while Gilbert uses more gestures and movements to engage the audience. Both approaches are effective in their way, as they reflect the speakers' personalities and help to establish a connection with the audience. Furthermore, both speakers also use visual aids to support their
Presenting a speech, so it is effective, is not always an easy task. For instance, in Julius Caesar, Brutus and Antony speak to the crowd back-to-back from each other, yet one speech in particular makes an impact on the crowd. After both monologues are given, it is crystal clear who is the most favorable of the two in the Roman’s eyes. One, in particular, used spectacular tactics so the crowd would change their point of view on the situation.
It is concise, direct, and meaningful to the audience. Long drawn out sentences can leave the audience in confusion, but being simple in one’s writing can leave the audience knowing exactly what the writer wanted to state.
Giving a speech whether being for the public or not, offers personal, professional, and public benefits for the individual. The individual might find it easier to obtain a profession, build better relationships amongst peers, or even propel social movements by carefully constructing and delivering a well thought out speech. A speech needs to be excellent in order to do such things; it needs to have a clear concise thesis, a preview statement, a great organizational pattern, supporting material, memory, delivery and good representation of oneself. Thus, during the process of constructing and delivering a speech, one must have those aspects. This will ensure the speaker will deliver a powerful and moving speech.
Attention First and foremost, for deliver the speech speaker need to gain the attention of the audience since if we do not have their attention we can not persuade the audience ,speaker can grabs the audience’s attention and orients them to the issue use a humorous or dramatic story, a question, a quotation, a startling statement, etc. For example, in a speech designed to get the audience to concerning about the obesity from unhealthy food ,Jamie Oliver open the speech by using a dramatic opening “Sadly, in the next 18 minutes when I do our chat, four Americans that are alive will be dead from the food that they eat.” Jamie grabs the audience attention by questioning how in short time four people can die from the food they eat. 2.
In the textbook Let's Talk written by Andrea Lunsford, new ideas and habits are introduced that will help people learn how to communicate better and interact with others. The first four chapters revealed concepts that were used by the authors of the following readings: "Arranging a Marriage in India," "Your Smartphone is making you stupid," and "Small Change". The concept that influenced the understanding of “Arranging a Marriage in India” is to get to know people different from you. Next, the concept that influenced the understanding in “Your Smartphone is making you stupid” is to research your views. Lastly, the concept that increased understanding of “Small Change” was to listen when people express their views.
In my first term here, at University of the People, one of my biggest issues was with conciseness; I was obsessed with clarity, but at a sacrifice of concise wording. I like to think that I have grown since then and that my papers and assignments reflect this, by getting to the point more quickly and
Being confident shows your audience you are comfortable talking about your topic and that you are well informed on what you are specking of. Another thing that I can improve on is relaxing, for example, to not be so nervous. If I can think two steps ahead before I speak it would prepare me for what I am about to say which will allow my words to flow out smoothly and correctly. I plan on improving these skills by practicing more speeches in front of people and doing some relaxation exercises before my speech. I believe by implementing more speeches and doing some of the exercises, it will have me more relaxed, keep my mind focused and boost up my confidence so that I may present my speech flawlessly for an A plus grade.
The end goal of speech should always be to inspire/inform regardless of how it is done; as an author Nora Ephron capitalized on the very different style of writing and still got the desired effect proving that there is no set formula on how to present information, the audience just needs to be known to appeal to them. This should be the case for all times, it allows for clarity for all groups because in certain instances what may be best for one group may not be best for the
Awareness: “the quality that allows [the speaker] choice over [their] actions. Developing awareness allows [the speaker] to pick up the behaviors that serve [their] audience” (Lloyd-Hughes). Empathy: to begin a speech “from the perspective of the audience, seeking primarily to serve their aims” (Lloyd-Hughes). Freshness: the ability to be “unique, spontaneous and memorable” (Lloyd-Hughes). Balance: the ability to determine which information is added or removed in order to connect with an audience on a profound level.
Delivery - The delivery of your words includes the flow, cadence and tone of your voice. You must be able to follow a beat and create a rhythm. Speak clearly. Make sure you sound out all
My biggest need is just the need to be better prepared and second to be more organized. Practice and opportunities to speak in front of a group will help to continue to develop speaking skills. During interviews, I dislike questions about how I feel or a time when I reacted a certain way. Just like in a speech situation I feel everything is moving too fast and I need to remember to slow down, take a breath and remember I’ll be fine.
