It means to have good bedside manners with your patients. This will allow you to have a conversation with the patient in a professional way, and this will help open up a dialect within yourself and the patient to discuss the situation. Following patient confidentiality rules, honesty, and having trust is vital in the healthcare setting. Every patient is entitled to patient confidentiality; therefore, any medical history should be cautiously discussed. In the medical profession, having an understanding and showing compassion displays a sincere interest.
Introduction: Being an allied healthcare professional requires not only the ability to meet standards and to be able to work in a consistent professional manner, but also to be person centred, compassionate and a good listener. Person centred care means that radiographers consider the individual, health needs, social background or lifestyle in order to find the best outcome for the patient. Diagnostic radiographers interact with people at the time in their lives when they are most likely to feel vulnerable, feel uncertain about their future or anxious about results. Therefore, person centred care can be achieved through good communication skills such as verbal and nonverbal which can aid the relationship between the radiographer and the patient to promote person-centred care. Also, it is good practice to involve patient into decision-making as it empowers patients and helps radiographers to perceive things from the patient’s point of view.
As a medical assistant I would ensure that the patient understands that this is a judgement free zone. I would also remind the patient that we are professionals and there to help them. Skin disorders are common, and no patient should feel embarrassed in a clinic or hospital setting. It is our job to calm and reassure the patient that we are there to Help. I would speak very calming to help calm the patient down themselves.
Language is incredibly important, in my perspective. To me if one speaks my language, I am more likely to trust them and give my attention compared to those talking in a language I am unfamiliar with or do not understand. Also, when an interpreter is not available during the workday, the patient(s) should have the right to have someone speak to them in their native tongue if it is not English. I think it would be most impactful if the translation was through their own doctor, nurse or other provider, rather than a person such as a translator that speaks over the phone, because the provider is the most familiar with their case and ask the questions in a better way. From personal experience, using a translator phone with the translator not in the same room to communicate with patients and their families, it is difficult and involves repeating yourself and causes frustration throughout visit for the patient as they want help, justly, but it is a longer process.
The “No Pass Zone” means that if a nurse, nurse assistant, or health care staff see a call light going off they cannot ignore it and must see what the patient needs. However, if the care staff is unable to fulfill this request on their own they must alert the appropriate staff. The impact this goal had on patient outcomes was that it improved patient satisfaction and was even showing a reduction in patient falls. Often, most patients calls are for beeping IV pumps or needing to use the restroom. In addition, patient satisfaction surveys are another example of quality improvement.
