The earth’s population is rapidly increasing day by day. The earth is full and we have no new geographical horizons to move to. As a result of this, there is the failure to meet the needs of the current world population due to the constant depletion of the limited natural resources. Thus, there is the call to adopt the practice of sustainability and sustainable development. Engineers play a vital role in sustainable development because of their role in society. Engineers build, they produce and restore. Sustainability affects the way in which engineering must be practised in the future because they must now employ new methods and designs to promote sustainable development. Engineers are important in sustainable development because they have the ability to reduce the energy shortage through the use of renewable energy and this case limit pollution which affects the environment and lead to climate change. In looking at sustainable development, this report seeks to acknowledge the importance of engineering and sustainability and how the creation of a bio-butanol plant will aid in development. To begin, according to the Brundtland Report, 1987, sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
