1.0 BACKGROUND STUDY
1.1 Introduction
Today, English is the second or third most popular mother tongue in the world, with an estimated 350-400 million native speakers. But, crucially, it is also the common tongue for many non-English speakers the world over (Martin, 2011). It is the world 's most widely-used language in international business and telecommunications, mass entertainment, newspaper and book publishing.
As in Malaysia, the people speak English language as a second language. Thirusanku & Melor (2012) say that among the Asian countries where English is not the mother tongue, Malaysia was ranked with the highest English proficiency level. This indicates our country has developed in line with the modernization era, where the people are able to communicate using other languages, not only their mother tongue.
Realizing the importance of the English language, the government has begun implementing new curriculum to help boost the English language learning in schools. Apart from that, it would also be much easier for the English teachers to communicate and give command using English language in order to deliver the input and to control the class. As a result, it leads to an effective teaching and learning process since both teacher and pupils able to interact with each other using the same language.
