Ethical Fashion Foundations, Origin and Practices
Joergens (2006) refers Ethical fashion as fashion clothing that is produced under fair trade principles in sweatshop-free labour conditions, with efforts made to reduce the environmental harmfulness of the process. It is also often described as “fashion with a conscious” as it concerns labour conditions and the environment.
Ethics within the fashion industry developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, where sweatshops became a global concern. A ‘sweater’ was a person working in extremely harsh labour conditions within a manufacturing factory that’s now established as sweatshop factories (Barraud de Lagerie, 2012). Ethics within fashion grew when those deemed morally wrong as workers were forced to perform in such minimalist factories. Every worker deserves a fair wage, fair working conditions following

ATO’s are an elemental mix of non for profits, exporters and retailers. They work with product producers to help manage many aspects of the business, such as product design, quality control and social responsibility, (Littrell & Dickson, 1997).
The practice of ethical fashion was first created in nineteen eighty as a strategy designed to counter the environmentally damaging production methods and sweatshop practices of the mainstream fashion industry brands such as Nike, Levi and numerous others (Shen et al., 2012).

Terri Babbage wrote an article called, “Dignity for the Workers”. She talked about the reality that workers in low earning jobs have to face, how difficult it is for them to meet all there needs. There wages are low and they dont get much time off. Terris’ essay shows sympathy saying, “We cannot allow this ruthless exploitation to continue, especially since the companies know they are doing wrong”. (Babbage 12)
Although fashion moves faster and faster the concept of clothing hasn't changed much in over the years. It continues to shape the identities of individuals and societies around the world. Fabric is still being used to cover our body and continues to signify social code. Although clothing plays a role in identifying differences among individuals within different socioeconomic levels, it serves many practical uses as well.
FSA Practice Essay: Clothing Over Time Clothing has existed in many cultures for thousands years, and clothes have advanced in their style and functionality over all of these years. From ready-made apparel used in the America Civil War to using computers to design clothes during the 21st century, clothing has come a long way from its origins. Preferences in clothing changed drastically as well, going from preferring style over comfort to comfort over style and back again countless times throughout the years. Overall, the evolution of clothing has been one of the biggest in terms of items for humans and will most likely grow even further into the future with new and better technology.
When we hear of the apparel retailer, Lululemon, we usually think of really overpriced athletic clothing. Lululemon is a luxurious brand for those who want to invest in high quality athletic clothing. This retail company was originally founded in Vancouver, Canada in 1998. In addition, the founder of the company is Denis “Chip” Wilson, who is no longer affiliated with the incorporation due to his unprofessionalism. Over the past twenty years, Lululemon has faced a couple ethical issues, but their ethical culture has also impacted their relationship with customers and employees.

Introduction Forever 21 is a clothing brand that is based in many countries. Most people would be very familiar with the brand as it caters to them in terms of a fashion retailer. The structure would be an introduction, followed by company background, country background, PESTEL analysis, porter’s 5 forces, strategic recommendations and conclusion.
According to Natalia Borecka (2017), only 14% of major brands are run by female designers, even though the majority of fashion design graduates are women. (para. ????) Furthermore, the fashion industry of today is sexist in a more covert way. It tries to sell women a fake sense of empowerment, for example using symbols and slogans of women’s liberation movement on clothes and in advertisements.
The globalization process has lead to shorten of this production cycle across the entire fashion industry to just two weeks. The “on-trend” clothes that were at one point of time only available to thin rich urban fashionistas are now available to a wider audience at a lesser and more affordable price. Death rate of fashion has increased as a result of the changes in the lifestyle and the society. The society has become more accessible and people are now looking for a change. And this change was marked by the introduction of “Fast Fashion”.
Fashion can find expression and be coded by materially and visually in forms of color, shape, texture and branding, and must be created and spread inside cultural fields combining local and global systems. Fashion is not just a social practice concerning clothing and address. It is more of an expressive sensibility favoring novelty and individuality, which energizes facets of both monetary production and personal consumption.
These days, fast fashion become very diverse and almost all countries have fast fashion shops. Put simply, the fast fashion is cheap, easy to buy, and fashionable products. In Japan, there are a lot of native fast fashion brands such as Uniqlo, and Shimamura. However, recently, there are not originally from Japan brands too, for example, H&M, Zara, and Forever21. These fast fashion brands became great social phenomenons, and its sale is increasing rapidly.
