Ethics and leadership are commonly intertwined, as some of the central issues in ethics are also the central issues of leadership This makes ethics fundamental in understanding leadership as quoted "ethics is the heart of leadership and a good leader is ethical and effective". In the military context, understanding the importance of ethics is critical because leaders will work to develop and use ethics, which makes them good and more effective. Leaders serve as role models for their followers or subordinates in their units and demonstrate the behavioural boundaries set within an organisation. Indeed, leaders are often the most important source of information that subordinates look to for guidance in their behaviors. This have a significant impact on how the subordinates act and perform because subordinates learn about values from watching leaders in action. Take ethical values of discipline at the workplace as an example. Leaders who come to work on time and dressing up appropriately are seen as having an ethical behavior. Knowing that he or she adheres to good value of discipline has created an environment where subordinates find it conducive to respect, trust and follow the leader. The leader is more likely to be seen as a role model and a good leader by exhibiting his or her ethical behaviour, which have influence the actions of others.
