6. Explain how the ethos, mission, aims and values of a school may be reflected in working practices.
Ethos is usually based on the character of the school, its’ philosophy or more commonly known as the atmosphere of the school, does it provide a safe and trusted environment that promotes and guides successful learning? Its’ building blocks are the values and beliefs that go towards making up the character of the school itself and is developed through various talks with the staff, the parents and also representatives of the community. The type of school can have an effect on its Ethos e.g. a Church school would have a religious ethos.
The Mission Statement is the overall intention of the school, the modern equivalent to what was known as

It is the essence of the school environment and the day to day practices of the staff and pupils there. The respect for children by the school, its staff and by each other should be seen clearly visible in the way that the learning and development mentality is celebrated by the school, this could be things like posters and displays, to reward and recognition ceremonies and individual and team competitions, and also the genuine pride exhibited by its …show more content…
In order to learn more productively, children should be encourage to work with each other and with the teachers, so that their language skills and learning styles become more rooted in a positive and capable way and that they grow to understand that unity can be rewarding in itself. Also strong ties with the local community or ‘community cohesion’ should be demonstrated by the school family. The links the school has with the local community and partnerships made with people and organisations from that community will allow pupils more opportunities to advance their learning and skill
Although there are some students that associate the school with happiness, there are certainly a greater amount that don’t, being the reason that many students were damagingly abused and will be scared for a long duration of their life. The meals that were provided by the school were in small quantity and disgusting, the clothes often did not provide the children with proper protection in the winter and were rarely well fitting. The sole languages that were spoken in school were English and French which majority of the children were unable to comprehend. In
Why is it important for colleges to have a mission statement? It is important for college universities to have mission statements because it indicates what the college academic policy offers students. Mission statements should provide the organization’s purpose and sense of direction while making the university look attractive within the organization to incoming students. A successful mission statement should be able to covey ethos, pathos and logos in some sort of way which will be used in principles of the mission statements. In this paper I will be evaluating, analyzing and comparing the three mission statements that I picked from University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Coastal Carolina University, and University of Florida along
“A Talk to Teachers” Questions 1-12 1. Baldwin establishes with his audience that he is not a teacher and like all of them lives in a dangerous time. He establishes his ethos by telling his audience that he is not (a teacher) and that he is (a fellow citizen who like them lives in a dangerous time). 2.
This example of ethos is effective since the reader now knows that Schlack has held a high status in the education system, making him credible. The author’s credibility is confirmed once more at the end of the article, when the footnote explains that he is not only a former superintendent, but a “consultant at Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency”, showing that Schlack is very experienced within the education field and knows what he is talking about. Since the topic that he is discussing and what he is proposing can be seen as controversial, the credibility that the author establishes is important because it heavily persuades the reader and influences the way the reader interprets the article. In the sixth paragraph of the article, Schlack states his claim that college “is not always the logical next step
The current framework also consists of the 7 areas of learning. Communication and language is the first area of learning. It says in the EYFS that communication and language is all about giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Children are learning and competence in communicating, speaking and listening, beginning to read and write must be supported and extended. Here, the child would be dependant on the practitioner to provide the child with the correct resources when they are at nursery and also to provide the correct help for the child (i.e. a speech and language specialist if needed) and advice for the parent.
The children in a school are valued, with an environment that fully encourages and celebrates their learning and progression and how they are developing. The provision of a safe and secure learning environment for all its pupils should be provided through recognizing the importance of welcoming diversity and equal opportunities. The atmosphere within a school should be positive, with this being reflected in the attitudes of the staff and pupils, all caring for and taking pride in their surroundings and in how the learning journey of each pupil takes
This is a chance for the schools to reinforce their ethos and values. The ethos of the school should be felt in the atmosphere of the school environment as it is part of daily practise and activites planned by the teachers. It should prioritise childrens safety and with children at the centre of all
The definition of ethos is the underlying sentiment that informs the beliefs, customs, or practices of a group or society. A way he uses the customs or practices is by following four rules he was given. He can only supersize if he is asked. He can only eat food that is from McDonald’s.
Ethos refers to the ethics and beliefs one has for the topic presented. The belief that children should not be working until they were sixteen years of age was greatly influenced after hearing
In the movie Lean on Me, the principle used ethos, pathos and logos in order for the students to succeed. When Mr.Clark took over the high school, he uses ethos by expelling all of the bad kids that have been there for a long time and all they do is go around and misbehave. Mr.Clark scared the students, and they know now that Mr.Clark wants them to succeed. He does not wanted the students to mess around and to focus on their academics. Another time Mr. Clark used ethos is when he yelled at the teachers because they were not dedicated enough to try to help their students accomplish something in school.
Chapter 4 The most commonly accepted contemporary framework for viewing parental involvement was inspired by the ecological model of Bronfenbrenner (1979, 1986) and designed from a social and organisational perspective (Epstein, 1992). It identifies three major contexts within which children develop and learn: the family, the school, and the community (see Figure). The Overlapping Spheres of Influence model recognises that there are some practices that family, school and community conduct separately and that there are others that they conduct jointly in order to influence the growth and learning of the child. According to Epstein, successful partnerships must be forged between these three spheres in order best to meet the needs of the child.
Today’s in complex global scenario societal and school environment in which we are living where teachers are faces challenging classroom management troubles, it has become necessarily required to establish partnerships between parents and teachers as a strategy to support students’ learning and development. In the late 1800s, it was a common practice for a community to hire a teacher who lived in the community. Such a practice encouraged close and frequent contact and shared norms between home and school. Contrast this with the situation facing most school communities in the mid-20th century, when a physical and social distance between the school staff and community became the norm. Stimulated, in part, by the movement to professionalize the teaching profession, teachers increasingly chose to live outside of the school community in which they worked.
At the beginning of this course I honestly thought that my personal values and ethics all came from the same source, which was the religion I grew up following. With this course I was able to see and reflect that it is a habit that was formed and that it has become a routine that I have put myself through. I have been living a life where I was told and expect to believe what my values were I never had the change to explore it myself. The feeling that if I was able to explore myself and my values and be more open to things other then just the values that my church taught me I would have been a very successful woman now. I truly believe that it would affect different aspects of my adult life.
School and teachers can influence the extent and quality of learning for all students. Teacher’s beliefs, practices and attitudes are important for understanding and improving educational processes. They are closely linked to teachers’ strategies for coping with challenges in their daily professional life. Educators have control over numerous factors that influence motivation, achievement and behaviour of students. They are turning around their approach into a focus on creating positive school climate and responsive classroom as part of holistic quality education based on child rights where there is effective teaching and classroom management, thus enhancing students’ learning experiences.
As a teacher, it is my responsibility to share information on the development of the child and have a clear and constant flow of dialogue with the family. This will enable both parties to deal with any issues that may arise within the family, school or community. It also my belief that parents should have an active part in their child’s learning and be able to lend a hand whenever necessary, and having open communication with them will allow this transparency and connection between home and school. The community is vital in ensuring that the facilities around the community and school is appropriate for the different children and families to live in and grow. A very good example of this successful collaboration is the Reggio Emilia approach in Italy.
