When you look around yourself what type of relations do you find? If you are a student, you have friends of your age. If you are a professional then people of different age groups come in contact with you. You are somebody’s parent or brother / sister or friend. All these are examples of social settings in which various groups function. It will be easy for you to think of family as a group. In fact, in any society, family is a basic group. Groups are very important part of our life. During our life time we live in different types of groups. Most of our activities involve groups. Groups have functional value for individuals as well as community and society. People form groups, parties, associations with certain goals. Today, groups as a mode of pursuing our goals, has become a common feature of our social life. In this way groups provides the foundation of our shared human nature. 10.2 Meaning of Individual differences It is often said that no two individuals are exact duplicates; they differ from each other in some way or the other. One will think that when individuals are in groups they will mostly likely be able to help, and come to a person rescue, well that is the opposite of that. When people are in groups they tend to run away from the problem, instead of coming together to come to a conclusion. When one part of the group is doing something, the whole group is going to follow. Not one member of the group will have the guts to stand up and do the opposite of the group. Families have many different ways they could be defined. I would describe my family as being blended. My brother has a different father than me, and he is still considered family. This aspect is important in my concept of family because even if I do not talk to them everyday, I still have this connection where they will support the decisions that I want to make even if it is not an opinion that everyone agrees with. On the contrary, there is definitely diversity by having a blended family, especially since they have been a part of most of my life.
