I remember the moment I became interested in fashion very clearly. Before said moment, my previous christmas wish lists had consisted of microscopes and computer games. I was an aspiring scientist, who would mock fashion models whenever they showed up in the 7 pm news I watched religiously. The moment it all changed, took place in Mexico City with my old middle school friend Jessica. She was gorgeous and stylish and poised and refined and everything my tomboy, disheveled self was not. She had a collection of Juicy Couture tracksuits, gold-plated heart necklaces and an impressive array of girly, preppy Abercrombie sweaters, mind you, it was 2006. Being exposed to these new, shiny things changed me. Before Jessica, I never had access to these …show more content…
Fast-forward to now, I study at Parsons School of Design, devote most of my time reading, thinking, watching, consuming and obsessing over fashion. However, my love for this world is not a family legacy, everyone else in my family are academics, economists, intellectuals that are more prone to mock fashion than follow it. As a result, eyebrows are raised, eyes are secretly rolled and questions are asked whenever I speak of my aspirations in the industry. “Why is fashion important?” is a question that no one has asked me personally but that I know is going through the minds of everyone I meet who is alien to the fashion industry. If you asked me for my personal response, the answer to that question lays entirely on the fact that a piece of gold-plated, cheesy Juicy Couture jewelry changed my entire identity. Fashion transformed my psyche, my aspirations and it created the person I was about to become. But I know, not everyone has these transformative, quasi-religious experiences with fashion, otherwise lips wouldn’t be pursed and laughs wouldn’t be boasted whenever one defends fashion from its frivolous reputation. So why should my brilliantly academic, politically-involved father with a knack for vintage books care about
I have now bid adieu to The Arizona Trail and my journey to be an example of hope for others who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis. It was an emotional parting but one which has ultimately become dear to my heart despite all of the trials and tribulations along the way. They were all inherent to the journey and would allow for its substance. I realize, though I might not have had at the time, that I would not have traded any one of those precarious times for a volume of lessons have been learned from each and every experience. I was privy to have met new friends and foster my relationships with old ones as well as family.
Fashion has played a major role in how society has developed an obsession with being
The Elizabethan Era was an extraordinary time period filled with many historical events; however, the fashion world included a variety of character that made a magnificent component during this age. From the multiple striking garments to the classified social structure, the 16th century fashion era valued an ingenious originality for clothing to all men and women. During the Elizabethan Era, Queen Elizabeth I, created a major impact on the fashion factor of this time period. The Queen’s ladies along with the majority of women, imitated her style of clothing.
Growing up we didn’t have much money as a family but my parents would always make sure we had clothes on our back. Two years later my family moved from Florida to Brooklyn, New York to be closer to relatives and other family members. Brooklyn is where I begin to design clothes at 14 and learned about marketing of different brands of appeal. I have always had a keen eye for fashion, the older I became the more aware I was of the need for affordable, stylish and comfortable clothing. I enlisted into the U.S. ARMY March 2005, to better myself and earn money for fashion school.
The fabrics were imported from India and manufactured in the north of England which contributed to the expanding British textile trade. (White, M) However, the new fabrics were quickly available for the lower ranks of society and allowed ordinary men and women to copy their superiors. This led to what Lemire describes as democratization of fashion in Fashion’s Favourite. The influence of the new consumerist culture was therefore reflected in the new desire for fashion to appeal aesthetically as opposed to the mere usefulness of clothing.
Fashion also changes in accordance with shifting social values. For example, in “Splendor” fashion reflects growing care for the environment. “These are fake
The pre-war world of 1912 looked very different than our modern world—especially in regard to commercial displays of fashion. During the pre-war period, societal norms concerning morality held the advertisement industry to high moral standards. Fashion catalogues displayed drawn images of featured clothing either on a white, traditional mannequin or tastefully draped across a male or female figure. Unlike our world today, sexualized images were not deemed appropriate for the public. Today, one can hardly enter a store in the mall without being confronted by an image of a practically nude female.
Growing up I remember from a very early age being completely captivated by Fashion. My love for Fashion has continued to follow me from the early experiences of watching the red carpets of award shows and being completely infatuated with the ladies long gowns and the vibrant colors of the dresses. To following me through elementary school and loving Art and being able to put colors together to the people in my life always taking notice from an early age, this has continued to follow me all through my academic journey and even to where I am today.
So why creativity is so important in school life and what does it bring to the curriculum? Education Scotland defines creativity as: “Creativity is a process which generates ideas that have value to the individual. It involves looking at familiar things with a fresh eye, examining problems with an open mind, making connections, learning from mistakes and using imagination to explore new possibilities”. We often think about creativity as making something, but in fact the root meaning of the word means ‘to grow’. Human beings are essentially born creative and from infancy on we find innovative ways to navigate life.
Fashion, or rather the fashion industry, is ageist, sexist, racist, fattist and fascist, but only in so far as today’s society is. This industry is merely an extension of capitalism, and as such its only concern is generating as much profit as possible. Trying to include and represent all different types of people is very low on its priority list, so it continues to perpetuate harmful societal patterns, be it on purpose or not. The most blatant case of sexism in fashion is that women in this industry are by and large models, while the more powerful and influential positions of designers, managers and directors are usually taken by men.
Fashion never remains the same and with the advancements in technology fashion has become even more wavering. Fashion is highly influenced from the social, technological and economical changes. A series of events that replace current societal patterns with the
Fashion is essential to culture, it offers aesthetic forms in fields such as dress and clothing, philosophy and religion, music, habits and customs, through which individuals attach to, or demonstrate their difference from, various communities. As a cultural process, fashion is responsible for situating individuals within a constantly changing forest of objects, people, events, styles and practices to which they relate, about which they form opinions and which symbolically help to locate them within various social strata and communities. In this way, being 'in fashion ', indifferent to it or actively claiming to reject
1.2 Statement of Significance Art can do lots of things that can create powerful and great changes in ourselves. Artist is someone that is so hard to read if we fail to understand them to interpret the underlying meaning behind their painting because it is their getaway to express their emotions and desires to the community. To accomplish this, the artists are communicating with the society by delivering their messages through their artworks.
Heraclitus once stated “the only thing that is constant, is change.” , nothing exemplifies fashion more than this statement. As a person that is constantly demanding herself to grow and change, fashion is the one thing that can keep up with me. It is the only constant in my life that I have a stable relationship with, due to its shape shifting nature which resembles mine. A part of change for me was always aspiring to be bigger, better, and bolder; I apply all of those concepts when it comes to fashion and design.
Fashion is my method of self-expression. The clothes we choose to wear gives us control over how others perceive us and affects how we feel about ourselves. From wearing black at the Golden Globes in support of the Time’s Up movement to the traditional Chinese Qi Pao, clothes can show solidarity without words or act as a way for us to connect to our cultural heritage. This is why fashion is important to me, because it allows me to tell a story about who I am and who I aspire to be. I have chosen to further my Management studies at the London College of Fashion because the MA Fashion Design Management covers themes essential for managing a successful fashion brand, which has always been a dream of mine.
