INTRODUCTION Indonesia is a big country which consists of many islands. In each island, there live many tribes of Indonesia. There are hundreds traditional tribes which have their own culture and language. Even in one island, the language can be various and different from one region with another. The language of each tribe in each region is preserved by its speakers. In Indonesia, along with those regional languages, there is Indonesian language which is agreed to be the national and official language in Indonesia. Based on Holmes (1997), national language is the language of a political, cultural, and social unit. It is generally developed and used as a symbol of nationality, it is also functioned to identify the nation and unite the people of the nation. Furthermore, Holmes describes official language as a language which may be used for government business. Its function is primarily utilitarian rather than symbolic. In some other countries, the national language and the official language may be different. There are some country even have more than one national language and official language. In Indonesia, Indonesian language represents both functions, as national and official language. It means that every Indonesian people should be able to speak in Indonesian because it is really needed in everyday communication beside its function to show the
