Some might say that this statement is not necessarily true, but it would very much depend on how one defines the term leadership. Leadership is a word that is tied up with any group of people working together. The word does not have the same meaning as leader. I choose to interpret the meaning as given by Jackson (2001): “Leadership can be seen to be located in the potential available to be released within an organisation. In essence, it is the intellectual capital of the organisation residing (sometimes dormant or unexpressed) within its members.” I rather like his interpretation of the word leader as well: “The role of the ‘leader’ … is to harness, focus, liberate, empower and align that leadership towards common purposes and, by so doing, to grow, to release and to focus its capacity” (ibid.). …show more content…
Success is not about one individual but rather how a team comes together to perform its work, especially in the school context. What are the different aspects of leadership in a school? Formal leadership in schools is a complex, multi−faceted task. (Knowledge Loom, 2008) Effective school leaders are strong educators, anchoring their work on central issues of learning and teaching and school improvement. They are moral agents and social advocates for the children and the communities they serve and they make strong connections with other people, valuing and caring for others as individuals and as members of the educational community,(ibid.). Over the past three decades’ educational leadership has been in search of ways to increase student literacy in urban middle schools in the southeast sections of the District of Columbia. The quest to closing achievement gaps in urban school districts have and will always be an on-going issue for educational leadership (Daly & Chrispells, 2008). It involves influencing beliefs, opinions, values, perceptions, or behaviors of an individual or a group, and it is an amalgamation of inherent personality traits, learned skills, and it is a response to situational stimuli. I believe that, at any particular moment, where two or more individuals are interacting, one of them will emerge as the leader the other(s). To me, this means leadership role is fluid, and it changes as situational stimuli changes. For instance, during interpersonal interaction involving two individual, the leadership role has potential to shift from one individual to the other, as the situational stimuli changes.

In leadership, it is important that leaders coordinate the effective management of resources, namely time, material and people, to ensure that they are conveying an effective teaching and learning environment.

I have strong leadership in my program and it builds respect, parent, teacher and community collaboration and a trusting and well nurtured relationship between teacher and students. Leadership Thought Prior to 1900 The earliest study of leadership thought would be the “Great Man Theory. This theory conceptualized leaders as a single “Great Man” who knew everything and influenced others to follow him. In leadership discourse, the Great Man theory—an assertion that certain individuals, certain men, are gifts from God placed on earth to provide the lightening needed to uplift human existence—is associated mainly with Thomas Carlyle (Spector, 2015, p.250). The focal-point of this theory is that leaders’ skills are inherent and set that them apart from those around them and that these traits enable them to assume roles of power and authority.
Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 1999; Yukl, 2002; Northouse,2013) The main components that have been identified to play a role in leadership are relations between leader and subordinates, interaction form between leader and followers, the influence that the leader has, the way in which the leader behaves and finally a leader’s traits. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
There are many different views and perceptions on leadership and what it exactly means. This is because there are many different types of leaders and many different views on them. But the basic meaning of leadership is an individual who can select the right group of followers and influence them through their distinct gifts, abilities, skills and knowledge. A leader focuses on the follower and puts out a roadmap to the overall mission and vision; hereby the follower is influenced to willingly and enthusiastically in achieving the mission and vision.
