How I came to appreciate literacy

Despite my mother making every effort to foster my appreciation for literacy, I did not buy into its importance until recently. My journey and development, as it relates to literacy, can be viewed as made up of four general phases. The first phase of my journey involved my rejection of my mother’s advice. Next, began the period when I really struggled with literacy and understanding. The third part of my journey with literacy was when I realized how important literacy truly was. And finally, I came to truly appreciate the value of communication. When I reflect about the different phases of this journey, I realize how certain events in my life have caused me to finally understand the real importance of literacy.

Growing up my mother tried her best to be a strong influence in my life when it came to literacy. She really wanted me to appreciate reading as much as she did. From the time that I began learning, and through my early years in elementary school, my mother pushed me to read anything and everything imaginable. She also forced me to keep a daily journal. At that stage of my life, I wanted to do other things as opposed to learning to enjoy reading and writing. She encouraged me to read and write too strongly, and I rejected that advice. From then on, that is what started my experience of having a difficult time comprehending what I had read.
