Personal Reflection On Early Literacy

Introduction:

Literacy can be defined as reading and writing. Literacy plays a vital role in the growth of one’s literacy development. Before you can read and write you need to develop a foundation for literacy – the ability to speak, listen, understand, watch and draw. Throughout one’s childhood education is greatly stressed; therefore, it became my mission to educate myself and reap the benefits of being literate. This is my story: How literacy influenced the way I talk, think, read and write.

My culture is very diverse. We are a multiracial ethnic group native to South Africa (Coloured) who have ancestry from various populations inhabiting the region, including Khoisan, Bantu speakers, Afrikaners, Austronesian, South Asians and many other cultures. In primary school, we learn how to read, write, listen and speak. What we did at primary school almost daily was a quick spelling test. We had reading books and each year the level of language increased to more challenging and complex words. Sometimes teachers let learners read out aloud to the entire class, this developed our listening and speaking skills simultaneously. This shaped the literacy experience at primary school and laid the foundation for high school and beyond.
High-school Literacy Experiences:
High school was a different ball game. Here reading, writing, listening and understanding was taken to a whole new level. High school is also the place where I rekindle my love for reading books and newspapers. New topics of literacy was introduced to us, for example, Shakespeare’s, sonnets, short stories, plays and poems. The concept of poetry was introduced to us as well – this tested our analyses and critical thinking skills, other topics include, different forms of writing, comprehensions and punctuation was also significantly emphasised when writing essays and longer and shorter transactional
