3.4 NEED OF APPROPRIATE MECHANIZATION As we have seen earlier there can be advantages as well as disadvantages associated with mechanization incorporated to the farm. So the choice of machineries and the degree of mechanization is the most crucial and critical part. The relevance required can be fulfilled with appropriateness of machines incorporated in the farm. 3.4.1 Appropriate mechanization In terms of small production units, appropriate technologies are small-scale but efficient, replicable in numerous units, readily operated, maintained and repaired, low-cost and accessible to low-income persons. Many a time small scale farmers are unaware about this information about appropriate machines, tools or technologies which would reduce their tedious work and benefit them economically. Lack of information is one of the reasons of their little interest in mechanization. Small farm size: As discussed in previous section, in India there are more than 80% of small and marginal farmers (< 2ha). Considering the economics of scaled mechanization, small farms are a big issue. Mechanization of small and fragmented farms can prove to be inefficient. Resistance to change, risk opposition: Past bad experiences with machineries may cherish their unfavorable attitude towards mechanization. In addition to that small farmers are reluctant to change the traditional techniques and opposition to take risks further hampers degree of mechanization. Lack of training: Even if farmers are ready to adapt to the latest machines or tools, they need training for that.
