The modern family is more diverse and open than it was thirty years ago. There are many types of families’ arrangements (for example nuclear families, single parent families, cross generational families, foster families etc), and the differences between them are substantial and related to the social and cultural conditions. Family unit is an integral part of society and for this reason it is in the constant interaction with society. It is organized within social system and it evolves with together with its changes. The institution of the family has passed through the several stages of evolution and was influenced by many social and economic factors, which has resulted in appearance of its present form, namely the modern family. In a society which reserves for its citizens multiple obligations, requirements and commitments, the balance between work and personal life has become the dominant challenge. This means that there is no ideal work-life balance to be achieved, but it always depends on every single persons and specific conditions. The best work-life balance varies from person to person, because we all have different priorities, plans and different expectations from life. Furthermore, the ideal work-life balance, changes over time and it is dynamic interaction between demands of employer and employee. Achieving the right balance for today may change tomorrow. For example, the balance for someone who is unmarried will change dramatically when he or she will get married or when they will have children. Required balance between work and personal life will be completely different for someone who begins his career and different for someone who is close to retirement age.
