As one of style of English that are mostly used by people around the world, British English (BE) has their own dictionary. A dictionary has several functions, such as to help us with the concept, to illustrate the usage, to clarify the distinction or to assist in a writing task (Hartman & James, 1998, p. 60). One of several types of dictionary is monolingual dictionary. Monolingual dictionary is the lemma of a language explained in the same language (Hartman & James, 1998, p.95). Hartman and James state that a monolingual dictionary performs several functions such as providing information on the spelling to assist in the writing task (1998, p.60). BE also has their own popular monolingual dictionaries.
Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary could have been better by saying: OALD is one product of BE dictionaries. With this system, students can listen to the entire text read to them with the online e-text. Vocabulary words are provided in the beginning of each lesson for students to identify the key terms in the text, search for their meaning in the glossary provided in the back of the book, and form an understanding of the words meaning which can lead to a higher comprehension of the subject content. The vocabulary words are also provided on the mastery system in English as well as Spanish. Once again for the English language learners, special education students and readers that struggle, an audio glossary defines key terms.
Although there were some words that could still be used in Newspeak, the way they should be used have changed to make sure they do not stir up the people’s mind into greater thinking. A Newspeak dictionary contained all the vocabulary used for that purpose. There were three kinds of vocabulary which include A Vocabulary, B Vocabulary, and C Vocabulary. Each set of vocabulary was designed for specific purpose. A Vocabulary consisted of words for ordinary life, B Vocabulary was constructed for political purposes, while C Vocabulary consisted of scientific and technical terms.

In Anne Curzan’s TED Talk, she mentions that “[dictionary editors are just trying to keep up with us as we change the language. They’re watching what we say and what we write to figure out what’s going to stick and what’s not.” (“What makes a word ‘real’”) It goes to show that there is not just single person who is in charge of language, but rather billions of people all over the globe. Society is constantly creating new terms that ease our communication and although we edit and shorten existing words, we rarely remove them from our language.
I was taught in order to learn new vocabulary words will be given a packet of the used of vocab definition to filled in the blank for the word that best fits the sentence. Also, it comes with a song for us to listens at first trying to figure out what it's talking about then write will discuss at a whole group summarizing what the story meant or song meant.
