Ages and ages past, mankind has welcomed the coming of the new year with merry celebrations, embracing the momentous event with open arms and free spirits. Eventually, this repeated routine was cemented into becoming a worldwide tradition known today as the New Year — one of the most anticipated annual events. Beyond its festivities, the New Year is commonly associated with the coming of unforeseen opportunities. It represents a fresh start, a clean slate, a new chapter, and so on. Furthermore what makes this event so special is the fact that it demands no price nor stipulation; all people, regardless of their age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status, are all entitled to recieving the wonderful gift of a new year. To be frank, had it not been for this homework’s topic, I would most probably not have thought of compiling my own list of New Year’s resolutions. This New Year, I find myself longing for these three major changes within my character: that I learn the true value of humility, integrity, and empathy. Firstly, allow me utter a rather bold statement: I know myself well enough to definitively say that I struggle with pride. At times, I am even inclined to think that I am egocentric and selfish by nature. On various occasions, I allow my ego to take control of what I speak and act. This pernicious aspect of mine has rooted itself within very own character and has grown to be quite problematic. Having a great deal of trouble controlling my pride, I have long felt the need for correction, for me to keep my pride in check, if not rid of it completely. Secondly, I long to develop the virtue of integrity. A great number of people often equate integrity with honesty, which in fact is quite correct; however, I am met with a conviction, a belief that integrity is so much more than just simple honesty, similar to the relationship between compassion and kindness. To me, integrity is being firmly grounded in upright moral principles. I believe that it is the foundation by which all other good traits are built upon, and it is a state of character which is indispensable to the Christian life. Being sinful by nature, I sometimes find myself regressing back to an attitude that does not reflect what is expected of a Christian. Nevertheless, I always find myself yearning for a character of integrity. By demonstrating it in the way I live my everyday life, I have better hope for growth, both morally and spiritually.
