Journey, “an act or instance of traveling from one place to another” (Merriam-Webster). “A long and often difficult process of personal change and development” (Oxford Living Dictionaries). Accurate definitions with very different meanings and both really applicable to my life and journey. I’ve spent years sojourning from place to place, exploring travel, jobs, seeking happiness, fulfillment. It was great, to an extent. The last year I, by force really, dove into the difficult process of change and transformation. My journey is hard and complex with many twisted plots and detours, just as all people’s stories are, because well we’re human. However messy it has been here I sit writing an essay to pursue a career in helping messy, complicated people navigate their journey more purposefully. Below is hopefully a snap shot of my life both …show more content…
In light of all that I have learned, processed and found healing in, where do I go from here? My personal transformation has enabled me to have a bigger capacity to love, care for, see people, have compassion for and hope for the future, just to name a few. I found myself wanting the same thing for others, an opportunity to share their story, to be heard, known, understood, empathized with. I began asking what job encompasses that? Label it a calling or vocation, profession, job, each label captures only a small part of the excitement I get when I think about the opportunity before me to pursue Mental Health Counseling. I know my time over this last year with my counselor has changed my life. I can only hope to be a part of leading people on their own journey towards healing, understanding, truth, freedom and ultimately hope. “We need to realize that our path to transformation is through our mistakes. We 're meant to make mistakes, recognize them, and move on to become unlimited” (Yehuda Berg). As the quote suggests, transformation occurs through mistakes. Even if one seems irrecoverable, there is always a flicker of hope. The novel Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen chronicles the journey of a “lost cause” into a rekindled and hopeful teenager.
Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.
What is a personal journey? A personal journey is the way a person changes throughout a series of events that take place in their life. In the beginning of the book, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, Salva was just a young boy who attended school daily and depended on his parents for food. But when war struck his village, he would have to be separated from his family and live on his own until he found them again. By the end of the book, Salva had grown into a much more mature person.
Due to a praying mother, friends that would not allow me to close myself off to the world, and something inside that whispered “keep pushing”, I have arrived here… in this space that I am in today. It took a lot of hard work. Cognitive therapy sessions, returning to my foundation of faith, and acceptance of my “new normal” were all a part of my wellness plan. In the end, I couldn’t return to my job of 17 years because it required travel that my physician has not yet cleared me for. Instead of allowing this to consume me, I relied on my skill set, and through networking at a social event, was presented with an opportunity to own a company that has a direct impact on the community that I love and serve in.
In “Aunt Granny Lith”, Chris Offutt’s short story, Beth and Casey change in order to conquer their problems. When tasked with an obstacle, one must be willing to change. It’s up to that same person to decide if they will change for the better or worse. Beth and Casey follow the steps of a Hero’s Quest, a pattern of many stories discovered by Joseph Campbell, and manage to come out reborn. Transformation is the major theme present throughout the story.

When an individual steps out of her comfort zone, she is forced to face difficulties by transitioning through tough obstacles and challenges, a process which fundamentally changes her attitudes, perceptions and beliefs. However, the process of transition is complex, difficult and often involves others to help acclimatize an individual to a new way of seeing the world. J.C. Burke’s 2005 novel The Story of Tom Brenan and Shaun Tan’s 2001 picture book The Red Tree powerfully explore their protagonists’ respective transitions and the ways in which their lives are transformed. Thus, by reading these texts together, the audience can glean both the difficulties of transition, and its powerful effects in shaping attitudes and beliefs.
Mental Health counselor is the best career for me because it will bring me personal satisfaction, financial stability, and abilities to help others. First, a career as a mental health counselor would bring me personal satisfaction. In 7th grade, I started noticing deep cuts on the arms and legs of my fellow students, and dealt with those who felt like there is no hope for them. I’ve had to sit there and watch as those I care about fall to depression and beg to die, knowing there is very little I can do to help them.
I have always been the counselor for my friends and have always wanted to try my best to improve individuals' lives. I have experienced many of my close friends go through stages of mental health issues, depression, anxiety, abusive relationships, etc. and my goal has always been to make their lives better. I took the steps to help them improve their mental health and wellbeing. I originally got my Bachelors of Arts studying Allied Health because my plan was to become a nurse but after a lot of brainstorming I knew I had a different path I should be following.
