When you act professional you communicate that you have assumed the professional helping role, you are clinically skilled, and your focus is on the patient. (Potter, Perry, Stockert, Hall 2015 Pg. ) In addition, you can demonstrate professionalism with patients in the way you carry yourself and how you represent yourself with your appearance and attitude. Speaking in a clear, concise manner, not using slang words or terms of endearment and tailoring your approach to generation and culture are all examples of professionalism with patients. Keeping in mind that a patient 's acceptance of you as a professional often depends on the manner in which you convey a professional and caring image.

The Code of ethics aims to follow two fundamental principles, one of which is to practice with honesty, integrity, and fairness. The second principle states they should report violations of the Code of Ethics and promote high standards in their practice in the best interest of the clients, public, and the profession itself.

Besides from wearing proper attire or having higher education, many set standard of procedures must be abided by to be recognized as professional (Beaton, 2010; Granowski, 2012). Codes standards of Ethical responsibilities require human service professional to respect the imbalance of power in the patient client relationship and avoid any improper relationships with the patient, which includes sexual behavior and socializing, insulting language, and coercion. If an organization seeks to instill social responsibility the code of social responsibility and ethical responsibilities applies in both individual and group settings.
