Public Education Needs to be Free Horace Mann, former Secretary of the Board of Education in Massachusetts and a current member in the House of Representatives, has been fighting to make education a right to all children and people in America. He has greatly contributed to make the Northern and Western states have schools to provide education for all children living in America. Mann has done a lot for education in the Northern and Western parts of America, and has pushed for equal education for all, but the Southern states are harder to change. In order to start making children go to school, Mann had to begin in Massachusetts. He has already been responsible for the construction for hundreds of schools in Massachusetts and around the US.
Brinkley depicts the opinion of Chief Justice Earl warren as he restated his words, “we conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine ‘separate but equal’ has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal”
Horace Mann acknowledged many arguments made against common school reform during his tenth and twelfth annual reports to the Massachusetts Board of Education. Two of these oppositions included fear of religious division and concern of unwelcomed government involvement. In his advocacy for universal public education, Mann counteracted such disputes by insuring religion to be a private matter and government involvement to be a beneficial necessity for the common good. Resisters of common school reform accused supporters (including Mann) of introducing an “irreligious and anti-Christian” system and wanting to exclude religion from public education, while taking away religious authority and influence (Mann, 1848). Mann states “universal education can counter work this tendency” Horace Mann’s idea of this free education for all will create opportunities for anyone of any socioeconomic class to rise up leading to a population of literate people which will “increase the intellectual consistency”. This will bring young children out of the harsh working conditions of factories and placing them in schools which will lead them to a more intellectual future. We can see the wonders of education in more recent narratives by David L. Kirp and Antonio Alvarez. In David L. Kirp’s article “The Secret to Fixing Bad Schools”, the reader finds out that Union City is a “poor community” with an “unemployment rate 60 percent higher than the national average” Union City is a great example of how a poverty-stricken community can still achieve high education success rates.
Education is the great equalizer, the balance wheel of society, and can greatly benefit the poor who often would otherwise resort to agrarianism. He also seems to scoff at the idea that some are poor because others are rich and says that with education we can create new wealth. For in the creation of wealth and wealthy people, he goes on to mention, intelligence is the grand condition. Mann’s last main idea is that education is essential to a successful Republican society. He discusses how in a Republican government, legislation is a mirror which reflects the moral character of the constituents and that without an educated government, the results would be fatal.
Against School by John Gatto is an essay that attempts to persuade the reader that public education fails to educate its students. The main way Gatto tries to persuade his audience is by presenting anecdotal evidence and by showing the historical narrative to the education system of the Untied States. Gatto attempts also attempts to reach out to his audience by referring to commonalities in the public education system that have been experienced by many people. Overall the essay is persuasive but lacks any practical authority. The first thing the author does is provide background, background on himself and the situation with education in the United States; and, this is what the author primarily does.
