Many school systems have become breeding grounds for many discussions over the years. Some of those teaching of religion course, freedom of uniform and detection of weekly course hours. The course content relevant to today’s world have might be compared with other problems and then we see that the most important issue. The issue of religion in schools poses many questions, but there are no clear cut answers. People’s opinions on this matter are not likely to change anytime soon, making this an issue that is going to be around for a while. Religion is an individual choice, that no-one can change other then themselves. There are two opposing points of view about teaching of religion in schools. Some researchers claim that religion should be taught in the home, not at the school. Schools have no option over whether religious instruction is delivered. On the other hand, some researchers claim that religion should be placed in a school curriculum. Students need to understand religions to help them respect and appreciate each other and to help this world resolve difficult conflicts. Although there are some different approaches on this topic, teaching of religion. Not even the parents should have a right to dictate what should be the beliefs or religion of their children. Engel v. Vitale: Prayer in the Public Schools is a book written by Julia C. Loren. Loren’s main purpose for writing this book is to inform us about the history of the Engel v. Vitale trial, an important trial which determined that prayer was not acceptable in the public schools quote as the book says the “In 1962, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down one of its most controversial decisions of the twentieth century.” In this book, Loren was not bias towards either Engel’s or Vitale’s side of the case as she did not appear to be very fond of one particular side and gave information regarding both sides of the case. With that being said, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history or even the Engel v. Vitale case itself because the author was very straightforward in telling about both sides of the case without leaving anything out. Engel v. Vitale:
(Werteimer 3). Children should be learning about the population and diversity. A lot of students are not informed about their own faith. As a CCD teacher I can see a significant amount of students who have stopped coming. It is very sad because religion is starting to become the last priority.
No matter what a person believes in, a child should be allowed to open their minds ho new theories and ideas. However both sides believe so strongly in that they have the right answer, that open mindedness and free thought gets lost. As of January 28th, 2017 there is a Bill still trying to get passed in South Dakota that would protect students rights and religious neutrality. It was having trouble being passed, because America (as a broad term), still lives in the past. It procrastinates on decisions that are not necessarily as important as other matters.

Prayer in public schools became an issue in 1960. A woman by the name of Madalyn Murray O’Hair sued the Baltimore, Maryland school system, because her son William J Murray was allegedly being forced to participate in prayer at the public school he attended. The American Atheist Organization, alongside Madalyn’s actions consequently led to the Supreme Court ruling in the 1960s. On June 17, 1963, the Supreme Court published its ruling on the case. The Supreme Court ruled that Bible reading and prayer in schools were unconstitutional.

Without learning about other cultures religious and philosophical views, we limit our ability to form part of a global community. The use of religious symbols as a supplement to a curriculum that incorporates the teaching of global religions should not be disparaged but advocated in order to ensure a more well-rounded system of education that accommodates the interconnected world we live in. To deny states the right to display religious symbols within schools, to a certain extent censors a significant part of society.
