Haymanot Dessie Professor Mohammad Jalaluddin CT-001-22 10.26.2017 Title: Relevance of religion in today 's society Religion is a subjective concept that the definition of it varies from person to person, from society to society and culture to culture. A person might use the word religion to define belief in God or way of life. Religion can also be a set of cultural practices and doctrines shared by a society. Let us take the two well-known religions in the world and see how they define religion. The Bible says, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." (James 1:27). The Quran defines it as "There shall be no compulsion in religion; the right way has become distinct from the wrong way. Whoever renounces evil and believes in God has grasped the trustworthy handed; which does not break. God is hearing and knowing." [2:256]. By just looking at the Biblical and Quranic definitions of religion, we can come to a conclusion that all religions believe in supernatural and/or divine power, they have a defined distinctions between the sacred and the profane and they all perform ritual acts. Religion has an imperative part to play in the improvement of society and in reality it is the most vital factor in the development of people as I will legitimize in this paper.
