My expectation of parenthood included events like family vacations, weekend strolls through the park, and the mundane celebrations of the seasons, all of which create memories that would provide joy and trigger sensory input generating bursts of happiness well into their adult years. However, as a parent of two children the reality is while I focus my time and effort on creating memories and family traditions for my children to pass along, my main parenting motivation is shaping my children into resilient human beings. Five years ago, my son was diagnosed with Autism and my world was shattered. Pursuing my Associates in Education, at the time, I recognized my son had some challenges and delays, but never expected to hear the ugly “A-word.” …show more content…

However, services like social emotion curriculum and social skills groups are often only utilized for children within the special education realm instead of being a daily practice within every educational environment. Incorporating coping and emotional regulation strategies within the general classroom would not only allow all children to have access to beneficial services, but, also, help to destigmatize, words like anxiety and depression. Mental health is not a challenge found specifically within special needs populations. Typically developing children, also, struggle with these issues and continuing to segregate these services provides a disservice and in many ways an injustice to our most vulnerable populations. With many societies already pressured by cultural beliefs regarding mental health services, we should be working to create an environment where everyone receives the emotional and mental support needed to be healthy both in mind and body. Open conversations about coping strategies and regulation should not be tied to mental illness, but with an understanding and openness connected to mental wellness. I can not help but imagine the possibilities if stress and emotional management were treated with the same importance and supported in a classroom just as subjects like English language arts or
