Transportation is the movement of people, animals and goods from one location to another. The importance of transportation in a country is compared to the importance of veins in the human body. This is because it enables trade between persons, which is essential for the development of civilizations. For the purpose of this research, much attention will be paid to highway transportation with respect to its capacity and service. There are public and private types of transportation on highways. Public transport is a shared passenger transport service which is available for use by the general public, such as buses, trains, taxicab, auto rickshaw, motorcycle taxi, carpooling or hired buses. Private transport (as opposed to public transport) is transportation service which is not available for use by the general public. Often public transportation service providers are privately owned; notwithstanding, any and all services provided by such companies that is available to the general public is considered public transport.

Industrial and Transportation Revolution During the late 1800s, the United States economy changed due to new inventions, remarkably rapid growth, and new forms of communication and transportation. Because the waste and improper construction also require constant repair and unnecessary maintenance costs. The low quality road, which had been perfectly demonstrated by the experience of Thomas Harris MacDonald, as chief of the Bureau of public roads. When he visited construction site, he found that there were lots of wasteful works and the bridges were more than likely wooden and not well built at all. Sometimes, company just take the highway funding for other purposes, like Boss Tweed who misappropriated public funds for his own benefits. Chapter 14 - Transportation At the beginning of the book, I discussed the motivation for this book. For those of you who forgot, I had a nail in my tire and paid extra for service because I checked the wrong box on the service request form. In this chapter, I am confident that you will get a better grasp of transportation. Owning a car

Can you imagine living in the 20th century without any roads, railroads, and canals when trying to travel somewhere? These different types of transportation helped impacted the American society between 1815 and 1860 were road, canals, and railroads. The roads of a country can be related to the veins and arteries as they allow the connection of the major organs which would be major cities and ports. Without road infrastructure, a country is considered undeveloped and poorly built. The national road, also called the Cumberland road, was a road that stretched from Vandalia, Illinois to Cumberland, Maryland. Vandalia was the capital of Illinois at the time. This road stretching from east to west not only promoted immigration but also connected the markets of the east and west.
The first set of roads were in NorthWest when cities were organized into equal organized squares, also used to organize the “Federal City”, Washington D.C. However the question was not whether they should be built, but

The national road: The historic national road was named an Ohio scenic byway in 2000 and an all American national scenic byway in 2002.George Washington said “settling the west will fulfill the first and greatest commandment, increase, and multiply.” Thomas Jefferson led congress to fund the first interstate highway in 1806. 800 miles Cumberland, MD to Vandalia. IL 60 to 70 miles per day.
At this time, federal highways were paved, had a lane of travel in each direction, and had a grade limit when climbing. Through mountainous areas, switchbacks, which would later be eliminated when Eisenhower's system was implemented, were needed to climb steeper
The Americans that traveled route 66 drove from Chicago to Santa Monica back in the twenties. Route 66 was the only main road for traveling besides the interstates. The people did not travel at fast speeds on route 66 because there were curves , and many other things to cause wrecks. Blue highways connect to small cities and rural areas. I know most of the traveled blue highways because interstates take the fun out of driving.
Railroad and Transportation in the 1800’s There were many ways to transport in the 1800’s, railroads being one of the most popular. Railroads were used in the 1800’s for transportation of goods and people. In the 1800’s, it was harder for them to transport places than it is now. Then, people would have to walk, but now there are cars.
Some methods of transportation include roads, rails and canals, which increased transportation. Resources that helped create the new transportation method came from the federal government, state governments, and private investors. The first highway that was built by the federal government was the National Road. The National Road connected west to the eastern countries. In 1815, the National Road started to be built in Cumberland, Maryland.

An introduction to highway building: Although there are many methods to constructing a road, all are based on the principle that geographical objects are removed and replaced with harder and more wear-resistant materials. The pre-existing rock and earth is removed by digging or explosions. Tunnels, embankments and bridge are then added when necessary. The material that the road is being constructed from is then laid by various pieces of equipment, which will be looked at in greater detail in this assignment. The construction management of roads has become increasingly more difficult as larger structures are constantly being required in increasingly short amounts of time.
