Thank you for sharing news to me and concern about my health. These three pieces of articles talking about food safety are really scary. When I am reading them, I found that the news only appeared in social networking sites like Facebook, What’s app and email. This makes me quite doubt about the sources and I try to verify them using some scientific method that I learnt from school. Critical thinking is very important for us and it means to think scientifically and logically. There are six steps for thinking scientifically that I want to share to you. The first step is to ask question. We need to ask for why and how frequently towards problems we encountered. Second, we need to do some research based on our question. Like doing observation and searching related reliable sources like scientific journals, newspaper and book. Thirdly, we need to construct hypothesis. Try to think up a testable explanation to that problem. Fourthly, to design experiment for testing the hypothesis. After the testing, we will conduct a conclusion. If we don’t accept the result, we will go through the process again starting from step three to construct another hypothesis. Otherwise, we will accept the conclusion and finished the whole process. …show more content…
We need to keep curious, seek for information and keep questioning. Empiricism is to find information that is reliable. It can be our own personal experience, information from independent and reputable authority or the evidences come from the natural environment. Rationalism is to do reasoning with logic. We need to keep objective when having logical thinking. Scepticism is to keep an open mind and constantly question on
Winnable Battle- Safe Food Objectives: Approximately 1 of 6 people in America get sick from eating contaminated food. Some people recover and few others may suffer from complication such as kidney failure, miscarriage or brain and nerve damage (10 Colorado winnable battles). In Colorado, there is at least 41% of foodborne outbreaks report and investigation each year. This is an enormous number that underscores the need for vigilance and highlights the importance of the food safety programs to identify foodborne illnesses (10 Colorado winnable battles).
Critical thinking is a high level of cognitive skills that helps us communicate and understand things effectively. In the You Tube video "Stossel Testing Therapeutic Touch," I found it was really interesting how the participants were given a placebo and yet most of them felt all these beneficial sleep changes. The power of the mind is amazing because if you believe it will work most likely you will feel that it did. My mother has all these crazy beliefs and I recall when I was bout 8 years old a bee stung me on my hand. I was crying and my mom told me if I wanted to get rid of the pain I had to get a pregnant woman to rub sugar on the wound.
Skepticism is the force that drives philosopher to continue challenging the unquestioned mass opinions. Skeptics are people who deny that we have knowledge about a specific subject. For example, a skeptic of the external world believes that we do not have any knowledge of the external world due to our perception of the world. Skepticism of the outside world argues that due to our perception, we are unable to have knowledge of the outside world. For instance, our eyes have deceived us do to illusions, like when hot asphalt looks like it has water on it.
12. What is Skepticism? What does it mean when we call someone a "skeptic?" According to the video “The Age of Reason/The Enlightenment”, Skepticism doubts absolute truths and asks questions to challenge these principles, to call a person a skeptic signifies their doubtful position about an idea/philosophy/doctrine presented as truth (MarshallMallow).
The study of people's beliefs, truths, and justifications for their actions is known as epistemology. The movement's absence of a defined structure has created uncertainty among
Perception is the organisation, identification and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. Like perception, logic plays a role in critical thinking. Critical thinking is the process in which one mentally explores deeper than the superficial matters at hand into the deeper layers in order to find out what the real issues are. However, when it comes to weighing their beneficial impact on the critical thinking process, logic and perception are by no means equal. While logic is firmly rooted in reason, perceptions are just as firmly rooted in one’s senses and can easily be corrupted.
Millions of people each day go to the store and purchase meat, produce, and medicine, without worrying if it’s safe, or whether it may be contaminated with things like paint stripper or cocaine. Prior to 1906, there was no organization to monitor whether or not any food or drug contained what it said, let alone if it was safe to be consumed. Even though legislation wouldn’t come for many more years, research into food safety dates all the way back to 1862 when scientist Charles M. Wetherill, who worked for the Department of Agriculture, began testing samples of food for purity. Wetherill’s first project focused on the alcohol content in wine but later led to him and other scientists focusing on problems such as contaminated milk from cows with
This idea is called by most theorists as cognitive consistency. As the research continues however, Leon Festinger introduced the idea of cognitive dissonance wherein a person experiences a psychological discomfort if the idea that was introduced to him/her does not support his/her current beliefs and values. Since there is a bulk of information introduced to the public, there is a tendency that people will try, in various ways, to make enlign this information to their current beliefs and values. This is where selective processes comes
The most worrisome problem in Fahrenheit 451 is the paucity of literature and critical thinking. Without critical thinking and literature, people in the society cannot think for themselves, or find new points of view or ideas. In Fahrenheit 451 everyone conforms to one idea. Nobody thinks for themselves, especially critically, and no one has different points of view, due to not reading books. In Fahrenheit critical thinking and literature is so bad you are thrown in jail and considered an outsider for doing these things.
Critical thinking is relevant in a few different aspects of life. For example, critical thinking can be applied to school and learning. There are people who support using different aspects of critical thinking in students curriculum. Laura Hummell said, "Critical thinking skill development is crucial in elementary schools. Students who are allowed to explore, empathize, question, hypothesize, conceptualize, experiment, and evaluate throughout their own learning become productive community members" (Hummell 5).
The article pointed to the several researches defining critical thinking skills. If I was taught 20 years ago what I know now. I am sure I would have been more prepared with the knowledge and skills of framing my mind to the critical thinking skills. Putting the skills and knowledge and applying them to my younger life. The article describes critical thinking as many different observations of one’s worldview.
Having a critical mind makes one wiser and more tact about what he or she states. Through philosophical analysis, our critical thinking skills are improved because it teaches us to consider certain things first, before finally coming up to a decision or before we continue to converse with
Historically, philosophers and scholars have been known to argue and disagree about the most trivial matters because of the prejudices and biases towards the subject matter. Descartes popularized the methodological doubt because he realized that throughout his life he had acquired and maintained certain opinions and beliefs that he later discovered were false. Methodological doubt was a process that sought to attain the truth that was beyond dispute or was doubted by human beings and his fellow philosophers. Therefore, the methodic doubt was an approach to knowledge that would filter and sift through all the beliefs and opinions that people had and categorize then to create indubitably true knowledge. It was important in establishing a firm foundation of unchanging facts and knowledge from which people could base or dispute the knowledge, beliefs, and information they had amerced in their lifetimes.
Tim van Gelder, in his answering the same question said Critical thinking is hard to do and requires a deliberate effort to engage at and even at that, it takes years of practicing and continuous dedication to get good at it. (Van Gelder,T. 2004). Therefore, we should not expect undergrads or graduates whose course focus are rather on grasping concepts, theories, exercises and many reviews of materials to in the midst of these, to engage in Critical thinking(CT). 3. Critical thinking, is a high cognetive skill that needs to be learned by practice like playing chess or Tennis and most times when it is taught in Higher institutions, it is taught as a concept for students to grasp once, while hoping they can develop the practice on their own.
Some topics that will be discussed in this paper will be how an individual can apply the top three critical thinking skills at work, school, and throughout everyday life. Likewise, the other items that will be clarified is the meaning of each of these critical thinking skills. The top three critical thinking skills are to analyze, synthesize, and to evaluate. These skills are a central facet of everyday life and to know how to properly use them will help in the long run. Each of these skills build off each other and it would be good to know what these skills mean in their entirety.
