The definition of secret in general terms is something that is kept or meant to be kept unknown or unseen by others . And secrets are of various kinds some are accessible some are not . It has to be kept in mind that the act was made by the British government in India during their rule in the country but now after so many amendments the act has now taken a rigid structure which is given ample protection to the official secrets of the government . To further conclude the act has been almost replaced by the right to information act which came in 2005 . In the present situation the act covers and gives protection to the government secrets . Above everything there is only one thing to be considered about the official secret act 1923 is its interpretation . It is very important in a country like India where the crime compared to the population is equally high and the bureaucracy has still a very big part to play.it is very important to see that the act does not fall under a wrong shadow . In the previous history of this act there have been number of misinterpretation which lead to arrests and cases of innocent people . This shows the power of the act which is still prevailing in the country . When it comes to giving away the secrets under the official secrets act the bureaucracy and media has given out number of information and named it “freedom of expression”. This act right now plays a very major role by still having right to information under its purview . The official secrets act 1923 has a authority to have declare a RTI null and void . Though it is believed that the RTI has taken away the lam light from the official secret act but the truth remains is that RTI is still under the observation of the official secrets act . A major concern is the similar issue as the said rule can stand in between the citizen and the information where any power can take undue advantage . Overall conclusion has that the official secrets act is powerful yet helpless in few situations .
