The concept of self and identity is important because the concept of self involves beliefs and knowledge about oneself and also it helps us organize and manage information about ourselves. The self-concept is a component of our self-schema which is a cognitive representation self and how we process the information about our self and others. How we conceptualize our self depends on the culture and society we belong to because many a time our self is constructed due to our interaction in the social settings hence in contrast to the self “self-esteem” is ones affective or emotional reaction towards and feelings about one’s self that is evaluative and asking questions like “Do I like myself?” is relevant to self-esteem. Eriksons concept of development of human has eight sequential stages that begin from birth unto death and these are not water tight compartments but flexible and emerge organically in the course of overlapping phases as human development does not take place in isolation but is a complex interplay of inner and outer forces that help an individual negotiate each stage of their lives. The inner forces are instinct, temperament, interests and ways in which one tries to find balance in daily life and the external forces are family, school, community, culture and sociohistorical context of an individual’s life and maturity emerges when one can find a balance between strengths and weakness and positives and negatives at each stage and as each stage progress it becomes increasingly complex so if a person passes through a stage unsuccessful he or she may develop a disposition which resemble one or two opposing forces therefore it is important that a person copes up with the challenges faced at each stage else it may be difficult to cope with the stage
