The piece uses African-American spirituals, song sermons, gospel songs, and holy blues to elevate a story showing the struggles faced by African-Americans in the south in the 1930s. Approximately 23 million people have experienced Revelations since its birth in 1960. While experiencing this piece for the first time, I kept in mind the three elements of criticism; description, analysis, and evaluation. To dance is to be knowledgeable about the stories of the ancestral heroes. Dancing, unlike painting and singing, is learnt at an early age. This allows large groups of people to demonstrate their clan rights in front of an audience. Dance is also seen as an occasion to entertain and to be entertained and through the work of dance to show their love for families and kin. It is for this reason that dance may be performed at the end of every day in some communities.
Dance could be just as popular as any other sport. The sport tv shows could be bragging about this dance team winning first place, that dancer winning a title for a solo, highest scoring routine, or anything big in the dance world. Dance could be as popular if it was given a chance. Some people think anybody can dance: “If you can walk… you can dance!” (Knuth).
Singing and dancing for enjoyment, shows how this music differs from popular or concert. They are poor and sing and dance because it's part of their culture, and they sing about their struggles and you can hear it in their voices. Music was always played as they danced, showing how intertwined they are. One observation is that there is a large number of female cloggers. Clogging is one of the main forms of dancing that goes with their music.
Though ballet wasn’t originally intended for women, it was inevitable that the female race would rise above and eventually dominate this powerful yet delicate art. Femininity in ballet developed considerably after the reign of men in this art form during the 15th and 16th centuries, when men in mask and costume portrayed women in productions, and King Louis XIV’s elaborate productions starring himself in the 17th century. The Romantic Era ushered in a real exploration into the roles of gender, and ballets became a woman’s forte, full of love, sexuality, and femininity. During the early days of dance in ancient times of primitive civilizations such as the Aztecs and Maya, gender roles were not important to society.

In her article, Embodying Difference, Jane Desmond argues that dance offers important insights into the ways moving bodies articulate cultural meanings and social identities. In other words, she explains the importance of studying the body’s movement as a way of understanding culture and society. She has two main arguments. First, she argues for the importance of the continually changing relational constitutions of cultural forms. Desmond further explains that the key to shedding light on the unequal distribution of power and goods that shape social relations are the concepts of cultural resistance, appropriation, and cultural imperialism (49).

Many of these early civilizations saw the movements within the sky as a celestial dance and were reproducing them in their own way as various dances. Song and dance is a traditional way for populations to teach and pass down important information to younger generations.
