SMILE DESIGN AND ITS PRINCIPLES “Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder 1”, by MARGARET HUNGERFORD Smile can be referred as a person’s ability to express his/her emotions with the help of harmonious relation between lips and teeth. Since 18th century the importance of dentistry has been recognised. Smile design is not a new concept. Pierre Fauchard of France (1678-1761) along with the other colleagues promoted dentistry and esthetic practices. Biological, functional and structural needs have to be considered in smile design. For this, understanding the differences in shape of teeth and structure of the teeth based on the each patient is essential in creating an aesthetic smile. These principles dictates how attractive one’s smile is / not?? REVIEW OF LITERATURE Gill JR in 1950 discussed the light and color phenomenon. According to this author, successful results in interpretation will come by the knowledge of light and blending of colors. We should observe each step in our work carefully to become master in dental art. He also adds up that without the knowledge of sculpturing and color, one cannot master ceramics/ restorations. This success in mastering will come only by experience. Lombardi et al in 1973 explains about visual perception and use of these in denture esthetics. Dental esthetics is of important concern in order to meet the expectation of the patients. This is possible by using principles and removing any sort of confusion that is existing in dental esthetics field. Chiche GJ and Pinault A in 1994 laid their experience to create anterior restorations with esthetic. In this article, they discussed that evaluating and resolving esthetic problems by systemic approach is needed and this helps one to understand the value of esthetic dentistry. Analysis of esthetics should be done to replace deficient crowns. In case of metal-ceramic crown, translucency is highly affected due to restriction of transmission of light by metal copings in this type of restoration. This search had found 60 articles and with the help of cross references, it included additional articles also. The objective of this search was to make a review of literature on tooth whitening. This literature showed that 2 shades of teeth bleaching can be done but should include a second follow up treatment after 1-3 years. Both the types of bleaching techniques i.e in-office and at home technique were included in the study and results found that teeth were affected by bleaching materials. Evidence provided view on short term effects on tooth pulp due to tooth whitening and showed that these effects were reversible whereas the long term effects remains unknown. Also evidence shows that in teeth which are treated with peroxide agents, the bond strength of enamel-composite resin is reduced with time but this is clinically significant or not is
