How important is sport and recreational time for our well‐being? I reckon that this is a question with a hard answer to find; otherwise, I do not think stress would have been such a problem in our modern world. In Great Britain alone, the number of stress‐related illnesses were as high as 487 000 last year. So is recreation time necessary for being able to work effectively? Do we actually have to take time out of our day, where we do activities we enjoy? Many view this as a “waste” of time. Can you really waste time? How about professional athletes, is their sport recreation, or is it too intense for it to have the right effect? Are sport and recreation essential for happiness and importantly, healthiness? Sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. It has existed for thousands and thousands of years. Recreation is an activity done for enjoyment and relaxation when one is free from any commitments. It is something people do in their spare time. It is not, however, the same as leisure, although leisure can also be a spare time activity. Leisure can be time spend doing absolutely nothing (e.g. lying on the couch).
