The Importance Of Survival Kadance fenlong Pamela watson ENG1D April 21st 2023 “And one has to understand that braveness is not the absence of fear but rather the strength to keep on going forward despite the fear” (Coelho). In order to face survival one has to be brave, one has to overcome their fear, one has to continue to go forward despite the fear they may be facing. In Tomorrow When The War Began they face a lot of fears. They all struggle differently with their circumstances. The fear changes them inside and makes them go into survival mode mainly because there is no other choice. The main characters that are affected in Tomorrow When The War Began are Eliile, Lee and Robyn. Conflict changes Ellie. Lee ends up with a close bond to survival, which transforms him. Lastly, Robyn undergoes change due to survival and repeatedly displays conflict in the form of person vs. person. These three characters help develop the …show more content…
First, When Lee and Robyn went to check on Lee's family, they got trapped but petrol and they were both shot at. “They were dodging towards the door of the newsagency when shots started pouring down the street” (Marsden 127). This shows survival because Robyn was actively getting shot at but still continued to fight for her life and succeeded. Second she throws a typewriter to save Lee and her life. “She picked up the photocopier that sits on a stand near the lottery desk and chucked the whole thing through the door” (Marsden 128). In order to help them reach safety, Robyn was able to throw something in time. Lee was shot, but they both survived, so she had to go get him and carry him to safety. Robyn then assisted Ellie in rescuing Lee. ‘“they're firing,” said robyn” (Marsden 142). Lee had to be with the group or he would die, so Robyn managed to get him into the bulldozer's shovel, climb inside the bulldozer's cage as Ellie drove away, got fired at, and yet managed to
Stewart elected to hold his ground to protect his fallen comrades and prevent an enemy penetration of the company perimeter. As the full force of the platoon-sized man attack struck his lone position, he fought like a man possessed; emptying magazine after magazine at the determined, on-charging enemy. The enemy drove almost to his position and hurled grenades, but S/Sgt. Stewart decimated them by retrieving and throwing the grenades back. Exhausting his ammunition, he crawled under intense fire to his wounded team members and collected ammunition that they were unable to use.
Josh had lost custody of his boys and was only allowed supervised visitations. When the social worker came with the boys for a visit, Josh took them inside and quickly closed and locked the door so she couldn't get inside. The supervisor said Josh had a crazy look in his eyes, she smelled gas, and she heard him tell the boys that he had a surprise for them. A few minutes later after trying to get help, the house exploded with Josh and the two boys inside. The bodies of Charlie and Braden had wounds and gas in their lungs.
These three people were put into different, but dangerous situations and with little resources along with their knowledge, they managed to survive. (T) It takes many traits in order to be a survivor but the most important is to be resilient, as is shown by Rainsford, Lee, and Ralston in each of their stories. (T) When it comes to resilience, there is almost no one who can compare to Sanger Rainsford. (E) While
As you frantically press buttons Phil bursts into the clearing. Then suddenly the helicopter moves up. Happy, you somehow manage to get it more up, but Phil jumps. You realize that Phil is still strong and might still kill you.
The author expresses mild courage in the American soldiers who ought to be stronger and
The way each character acted and behaved in the war sort of related to myself and how I think I would be like in a war. For example when a man named Jorgenson panicked when he had seen someone injured during a battle, he didn’t know what to do. Many people can relate, even myself, when Jorgenson had said, “When you got hit, I kept telling myself to move, move, but I couldn’t do it, like I was full of drugs or something.” His reaction during the war and being in shock when so many other things are happening is the result of why so many people can relate to him. Nobody is prepared to take in so much even during a war.
Common sense is that each person changes differently because, he is individual but going to war changes both men and women to mean cold and cruel creatures. To start with war makes each character loses innocence. As they were children approximately 18 or 19 years old they grew “old”. “I mean, when we first got here - all of us - we were real young and innocent, full of romantic bullshit, but we learned pretty damn quick”. People either find or lose themselves.
In this quote, we see the struggle to maintain a sense of self under extreme circumstances, and the deep emotional scars that remain even after liberation. The will to survive is a testament to the resilience and strength of the human
During World War II, things could get extremely stressful. So stressful, in fact, people would get mentally ill. The war was so much for them, that they would not be physically injured, but mentally. Their spirits would become drained, and they couldn’t go back into battle. That’s why coping methods were crucial in hard times.
The determination to live comes from human nature. But the urge of giving up when we come across a difficult problem is also a part of human nature. There a few people in this world that have the characteristics of resilience. As author Kendra Cherry describes them, "People that are able to keep their cool have what psychologists call resilience, or an ability to cope with problems and setbacks" (Source A; Cherry, 1). An example of someone who has the characteristics of resilience is a bombardier name Louis (Louie) Zamperini.
(third paragraph 66) They become very cautious now of everything; more than before and try to stay safe and keep their platoon safe. Bravery can't always save you, even in the hardest
Combat is one of those incidents, where the best and the worst of people will be shown. The effects from combat could last minutes to a lifetime and will define people for the rest of their lives. To overcome the effects, people must have coping mechanisms. In the book, The Things They Carried, a platoon of soldiers is followed in their quest to survive the Vietnam War. The soldiers developed coping mechanisms to deal with stress so they can function normally and survive the war.
War and its affinities have various emotional effects on different individuals, whether facing adversity within the war or when experiencing the psychological aftermath. Some people cave under the pressure when put in a situation where there is minimal hope or optimism. Two characters that experience

They have to deal with losing their loved ones, using their bodies as a form of economic support, and being abused by men at war. Regular civilians had to deal with the loss of family members or friends that went to war. Lan had experienced a lot of loss due to the war. Lan told Kien, “‘What a cruel time… and so very long. The war swept away so many people’” (52).
