2.0 Chapter 2
2.1 Sustainable Development in Construction
2.1.1 Definition
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (McNeill, 2000). Also, a sustainable development should decrease recent levels of consumption of energy and resources and making of waste in order not to damage the natural systems which future generations would rely on to provide them with resources, take in their waste and provide safety and more healthful living conditions.
2.1.2 Importance of Sustainable Development
Sustainable development consists passing on to future generations a stockpile of ‘capital’ that is at least as big as the one that our individual

Through the green technology implemented, it would assist on the savings probable of RM1bil in energy related costs for users and RM5bil related to investments in utility infrastructure. Through the channel of sustainable development, it will save the consuming non-renewable fuels as a sustainable development highlighted on the use of energy efficient approach which saves integrated fuel consumption and lengthen the lifetime of scarce reserves. Most importantly, a sustainable development is required to conserve the environment through using the green technology to minimize the exploitation of the natural environment (Chua & Oh, …show more content…
Information from other sources, the obsolete of information or misinformation would plague the successful development on sustainable building. The multitude of developers, building designers, building engineers, building contractors, manufacturers and building officials are acceptable to defending the environment but are not acceptable on applying green materials to accomplish the task. The unlucky perception is that green building materials seem bad, very expensive and do not perform well. Comprehension this perceptive is necessary for effectively resolve such concerns. As a result, so as to better understand what a green building material is, it is essential to explain what they are not. It is significant to get rid of the amplify misperceptions on green building
Although dropping more green pace into cities is unlikely to solve the
In other words, new buildings must reduce usage of resources through the establishments of resourceful, energy efficient products and materials, essentially less pollution. The abundance of programs and initiatives provided by the government and other organisations infer much pollution, environmental issues and concerns are prevalent in Pyrmont. Due to the increase in companies and industries settling into the precinct, the burning of fossil fuels increases, thus a rise in carbon dioxide levels which will, in turn,
Besides reducing the venomous bite mankind has struck upon the environment, green infrastructure provides the machinery that allows us to harvest sources of energy that are renewable like the wind, rivers, ocean, and sunlight. These naturally occurring renewable resources are used to create energy, which would normally be created from harmful sources like nuclear power plants, coal factories, and fossil fuels that contribute to climate change and the depletion of our planet. Along with the construction of green energy sources they must also be maintained and repaired, which brings jobs to America and strengthens our economy. Converting to green energy could also reduce the fossil fuel driven conflicts we have deeply invested in the middle east. Green energy and green infrastructure aren’t a big deal in today 's world because going green doesn’t make large corporations as much money as they do with fossil fuels and crude oil.
To decrease climate change, citizens can garden, reduce the use fossil fuels, and monitor where their food comes from. These life changes can make the ordinary citizen a combatant against global warming and climate
Pollution is starting to be a major problem in the United States. The main problem begins in cities or highly populated areas and it can occur because of car exhaust, emissions from manufacturing companies, cigarette smoke, biological pollutants, etc. One way Sophie Krause proposes to solve at least a part of the problem is to “Go Green with Blue Roofs.” She proposes that people change the structure of their roof in order to help the draining systems. The water will filter better and public waterways will be safer to drink from.
ASSESSMENT/AUDIT 1. Understanding of why it is important to measure sustainability and the associated problems and conflicts of different indicator sets and types Evidence – It is really difficult to find exact concept for measuring sustainability. For instance the measurement of life parameters is differ between different cultures and individuals. So, different solutions will be required to be found for many different communities. However; we should not assume that things we cannot measured easily is not important.
Firms which are managing environmental affairs their relations with consumers, vendors, regulators, and other industries are increasing and improving their sustainability to the success. The environmental strategies include developing green business, divesting environmental-damaging business, Struggle to become low cost producer, through energy conservation and waste minimization, and implementing different strategy through green product features. The firms can include environmental representative in their board of directors, announce bonus for the favorable environmental results, establish environmental oriented objectives, include environmental values in mission statements, and provide environmental training program for firm managers and employees. WHY FIRMS SHOULD “BE GREEN”
Introduction: The term 'advanced development technology ' in construction industry covers an extensive variety of present day techniques and practices that envelop the most recent improvements in materials technology, design methodology, amount studying, offices management, administrations, structural examination and design, and management skills used in construction industry. Technological advancements in different fields such as medical industry, business industry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering etc. have brought many positive impacts. Fusing advanced development technology into construction industry can expand levels of value, proficiency, safety, maintainability and incentive for money. The advanced technologies in construction industry are very useful for all type of small and large scale construction projects.
I agree with the assertion that in the context of Sustainable Development ‘the reality of life today is that the economy dominates environment and society. The Concept of Sustainable Development Sustainable development refers to “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs”, and was produced by the Brundtland report (WCED, 1987). The concept also takes into account the needs of the poor in developing countries by outlining achievable objectives of importance (WCED, 1987).
One of the most common drawbacks of the energy efficient construction is the high cost of enforcing. Although the additional costs are required to build and plan such buildings, they are balanced out by saving on energy expenditure; while, it is still extra money provided to build; thus, additional cost is valid criticism. In addition to this, building materials are not always available. The most noticeable negative feature of energy efficient construction is the environmental concern. Although it is environmentally friendly which produces less carbon emissions, it has slight unfavorable effects on the human health.
The conclusion conveyed at the end of this paper, will be that sustainable development is a concept with weaknesses however, the strengths outweigh them. To begin with, the concept of sustainable development famously culminated in 1987 with the United Nations 'Commission on Environment and Development ' also known as the 'Brundtland Report ' (Everard & Longhurt, 2017; pp. 1244). The article introduced, the most widely known definition of Sustainable development as "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987).
Instead of burning fossil fuels that will be depleted within short generation, alternative energies such as the wind turbine or solar panels needs to be implemented to sustain and care for the resources that remain. The concept of reducing our Carbon footprint in the world is the more modern way of looking at sustainable living, in which the World realises humans have not used resources wisely. By looking at the changes over the past centuries, an International network of scientists have unanimously concluded that human society is altering natural functions in three fundamental ways. And consequently, they were able to define four basic conditions that must be met if we want to maintain the environmental services that sustain human society.
Eco friendly building material is those provide the appropriate service and lifetime, with the minimal maintenance, while minimizing the decimation the raw of material, the pollution from, and also energy consumption by production and use, and that have the maximum potential for the reuse. The use of the Eco friendly building materials and products are represents one important strategy in the design of a building. In addition, the Eco friendly building materials have benefits to the building users such as improved health and the productivity, in order to change the spatial configurations of the lower costs associated, reduced maintenance costs over the life of the building and so forth.
Kahn’s (1995) approach to the sustainable development theory is consistent with the modern day development techniques of Europe 2020 priorities; smart growth, sustainable growth and inclusive growth. The adoption of some innovative strategies such as the utilisation of renewable energy as an integral part of the energy mix could result in growth of the economy, which will eventually trickle down to the poor or extend to the rural or disadvantaged areas of the country. The social sustainability generally explains the idea of equity among the people, empowerment, participation, accessibility and institutional stability. It seeks to ensure a good standard of living in the country by alleviating poverty. Environmental sustainability seeks to explain the ways in which exploitation and utilisation of the natural resources will not be made to negatively affect the environment or the health of human beings (Kahn 1995).
Sustainable development, as its name suggests, is a concept continually elaborating. The most commonly used definition, according to World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), is the development which “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED, 1987). It shows the importance of considering benefits for both current and future generations and strongly supports economic development, while it also implies when accessing environment and natural resources, human beings tend to take an anthropocentric view, that the primary goal is to satisfy human needs. With no regard for earth as a life-support system, a development will not be considered sustainable. Therefore, by taking economic, social, environmental issues into accounts is a key approach to develop sustainably in different contexts.
