Importance Of Teaching English

It goes without saying that grammar teaching plays an essential role in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This opinion is based on the assumption that without knowing the grammatical rules of the language, your language usage will be limited. Despite its importance, grammar teaching has gone through some debates for the decades. Before the 1970s, it was a common belief that grammar was a crucial part of the language teaching. This belief was then questioned by the conception that "knowledge of the grammatical system of the language was one of the main components which underlie the notion of communicative competence." (Richards & Renandya, 2002). That is to say, we should both learn the rules of the language, and know how to use …show more content…

The teacher first gives the grammar rules and vocabulary of the language. Then, the learners need complete tasks to practice those rules and vocabulary in activities. The deductive approach is a traditional way of teaching because it is very teacher-centered and it concentrates initially on rules and then usage. Therefore, input language is not authentic, just adjusted to the learners. Being passive is a too challenging problem for the students to learn effectively. In contrast with the deductive method, the inductive teaching also known as induction, from the verb ' 'to induce ' '; is a rule-discovery path in that the teacher first gives examples and then wants the students to find the rules. The inductive approach is a modern way of teaching in that teacher makes use of student noticing. It enables the students to learn the usage of the structure by practicing the language in context. By this way, the students are also able to understand the rules from the examples. Instead of being the center of the lessons, the teacher watches and helps the learners, then provides more opportunities to practice. When compared to each other, the …show more content…

Furthermore, such an approach can meet demands of different kinds of learners. On the other hand, it has disadvantages to some extent. It may be more appealing or helpful since it is mainly student-centered and develops learner 's autonomy. Nonetheless, it may be disadvantageous when it comes to usage of time as it requires more time. It stands to reason that the inductive approach to instruction is more practical for young learners at elementary. But the inductive approach cannot be used for all ages. Ultimately, the learners may make wrong assumptions on grammar rules. In fact, the instruction of the approaches varies depending on the learner 's age, gender, and language level. Another key to remember is that instructional methods could use both deductive and inductive. All things considered, it seems reasonable to assume that many lessons could include both approaches. Therefore, both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages. We must consider some factors carefully, especially in order to make a decision which method is the best for a given topic. To give an illustration of what I mean, let’s look at the case of time. I generally ask myself how much time is available to learn a new concept.I may
