Part of the appeal is the fact that most of the animals pay no attention to the humans and go about their business. For the visitors, this is an amazing experience. Some of the most interesting animals that you can see up-close-and-personal are:

• The ever-present giant Galapagos tortoise lives on seven of the islands. There are several different species and they may live up to 150 years.

• The marine iguana is the only water-loving lizard in the world. It dives to eat seaweed and dries out basking on the rocky shore. When the salt water is dry, the iguana expels the salt in a misty plume.

• There are so many species of birds and each is so extraordinary, that it is hard to list them all. There are about 56 varieties of birds, of which 27 are only found on the Galapagos. The boobies put on a comedy show, the albatrosses are majestic and there are hundreds of Darwin’s finches.

• The sea lions seem as interested in the tourists as the tourists are in them. There are several good places for dolphin and whale watching.
