2.0 Discussion on the triage process and its significance in emergency nursing
Triage is the process of determining the priority of patient’s treatments based on the severity of their condition.A common definition noted throughout the literature is that of a process which "places the patient in the right place at the right time to receive the right level of care" (Qureshi & Veenema 2003:153).The term comes from the French verb trier, meaning to separate, sort, sift or select.Triage is an information-collecting and decision-making process. It is performed in order to sort injured and ill patients into categories of acuity and prioritization based on the urgency of their medical or psychological needs. Triage begins when the patient enters the emergency department and is performed either in a specified location or at the patient bedside. It is a dynamic process.
2.1 Purpose and benefit of triage
The purpose and benefit of triage is to expedite the deliver of time and critical treatment for patients with life threatening conditions.Any life of limb threatening illness or injury for which immediate treatment is necessary and need to be seen immediately. For examples, active seizures, respiratory circulatory failure, compromised airway ,arterial bleeding and testicular torsion with severe pain.
Second is to ensure that all people requiring emergency care are appropriately categorized according to their clinical condition. The individual in charge
Are met by professionals, because due to their illness they are experiencing changes and therefore the relevant staff will be able to help with the specific care that they need for their specific needs. This will help professionals to be able to support the client in the best possible way that will benefit them overall when receiving their care
Discuss categories A, B, C agents, how are they different and why, and how does your hospital prepare for these events?
7 / D.P7: Explain how different procedures maintain health and safety in a selected health or social care setting Maintaining health and safety in health and social care is extremely important to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of all their service users as well as other individuals service providers may come in contact with in the setting. There are several procedures that help to maintain this health and safety however they can all vary between settings for example, health and safety procedures will be slightly different and more focused on certain areas in hospitals and especially in paediatric ward compared to in drop-in centres where the needs and risk to service users are slightly different. Some of the procedures used in health and social care to maintain health and safety include; infection control and prevention, safe moving and handling of equipment and individuals, food preparation and storage, storage and administration of medication and storage and disposal of hazardous substances.
The definition for “appropriate medical screening examination” and “necessary stabilizing treatment” were not adequately delineated within the act and lead to many different interpretations on what services encompassed compliance (Rosenbaum & Kamoie, 2003). The definition of what was acceptable medical screening and necessary treatment varied between healthcare professionals from brief and simple, to complex. This became an issue for many organizations and physicians in endeavoring to remain compliant with the law. Another result of the implementation of EMTALA was the increase of patients utilizing ER services. A number of critics have pointed to EMTALA as the cause of over-utilization of ER services, even though there have not been any conclusive studies proving that the law is the cause of increased costs and congestion within hospital ERs (Rosenbaum & Kamoie, 2003).
We take forward that obligation to insure that others are treated
Because of EMTALA patients will no longer be turned away for economical reasons. They will be attended to with medical screening and examinations no matter the condition. Patient dumping" became an issue when so many unstable people were turned away or transferred started to have more difficulties with their health condition because they were not attended to on the spot at the time. Many hospitals participated in this practice and it was only endangering the patient’s health and life. The purpose of health care is to meet the medical needs and the safety and well being of a
1. To make sure the care and treatment can continue to be given safely no matter which staff are on duty, 24 hours a day, seven days a week 2. To record the care that has been given to the patient/client 3. To make sure there is an accurate record to be used as ‘evidence’ when there is a complaint from a patient/client about the
What roles does the nurse play in ensuring the implementation of quality and safety initiatives? The nurse must ensure that all federal guidelines are followed in order to continue to receive funding for the Head Start program. Without these funds Head Start would be unable to continue to operate. Some of the guidelines for funding include quality and safety initiatives that must be followed.
Patients are our priority and when there is any complaint from their side, it should be handled and sorted
In the film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, there are four characteristics of a controlled environment. These include; status hierarchy, depersonalization, adjustment, and institution. Viewers can see these ideas through different scenes and situations in the movie. The overall movie stems from institutionalization, because it is set in a psychiatric hospital, which keeps the patients there confined to a strict environment and schedule. Doctors and nurses look at small traits or changes as something significant, whereas in the real world that small trait would appear as a norm and be overlooked.
The concepts of this theory include function of professional nursing, presenting behavior of the patient, immediate reaction, nursing process discipline as well as improvement (Petiprin, 2016). One of the roles of a nurse is to meet the immediate needs of the patient. Patients typically present to a facility with a requirement that should be identified and met by the nurse. The nurse should be able to identify the problematic situation from the patient to be able to address the need for help. The patient develops their perception of events and circumstances based on their automatic feelings and thoughts which causes the patient to have an immediate response.
Since the spread of formal schooling and education in human societies, fostering cognitive abilities, such as understanding, reasoning, critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving and judgment has been highlighted [1]. Problem-solving is an essential skill in today’s life [2]. Problem-solving is a goal-directed thinking [3]. It is a mental process, some logical, orderly, intellectual thinking that helps cope with problems, search several solutions and choose the best solution [4]. According to Moshirabadi, problem-solving is a systematic process and a problem-focused situation analysis that indicates the ability of individuals to overcome obstacles and to achieve goals.
Providing care to a patient is a particularly challenging process that requires a great deal of effort from a nurse. A nurse’s ability to give quality care to their patient is an important aspect to a patient’s life both now and in the future. As such, nurses must exhibit specific qualities in their practice in order to maintain the best standard of care for their patients. Given this, I believe that the standards of knowledge, advocacy, and self-awareness are foundational to the nursing practice and to a nurse’s capacity to provide quality patient care. Knowledge
1. NURSING HEALTH ASSESSMENT 2.PLANNING Once a patient and nurse agree on the diagnosis, a plan of action can be developed. If multiple diagnoses need to be addressed, the Head nurse will prioritize each assessment and devote attention to severe symptoms and high factors. Each problem is assigned a clear measurable goal for the expected beneficial outcome.
