Part A Question 1 (a) Ethical behaviour is acting in ways unfailing with what society and people naturally think are good principles. Ethical behavior tends to be good for business and involves signifying respect for key proper principles that include honesty, impartiality, equality, self-respect, diversity and individual rights. Unethical behavior is an act that falls outside of what is measured morally right or suitable for a person, a profession or an industry. Personalities can behave unethically, as can businesses, experts and politicians. Ethical and unethical behaviors are conducts that transpire within organizations by personnel on a daily basis. “Ruthless pursuit of self-interest” is one of the foundations of unethical behavior. It is fundamentally classified as greed. Many may not know the existence of this action but it is a norm in most workplaces. We were personally at the receiving end of a ruthless pursuit of self-interest during our previous employment in an educational institution. Sadly, the guilty party was the manager of Human Resources herself. She was in truth, committing unethical behaviours that fed on her pursuit of self-interest. She was more focused on earning praises and gaining recognition from the board of directors as opposed to her actual duty of managing and taking care of the welfare of the employees. The organization was doing badly on all fronts. Salaries were not being paid on time and employees were on the verge of quitting the
At this point there has been clear evidence that there is an ongoing pattern of the misuse and abuse of the funds. During the unethical behavior none of the leadership did anything to correct the issues until they were caught. Which brings me to my point. Were the issues limited to the CEO and the COO or were those individuals the fall guys for a broader problem? This is why I would suggest that the organization start with a clean slate with individuals who have ethical experience leading nonprofits.
From what this case turns out to be, as determined by the facts surrounding it, if our organization was set up such that our supervisors have the power to fire employees under their supervision, the company could have potentially found its entangled in a Sarbanes-Oxley lawsuit. There is no doubt that had this morally upright secretary been fired for standing her ground in the face of our rogue supervisor 's demand for her to cook the books the company could have been in violation not only for attempting to file a fraudulent expense account but for taking retaliatory action against her for refusing to do such. On the other hand had the secretary connived with her boss, the supervisor and prepared the false expense report, the company 's reputation could have again been in violation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. A federal law that prohibits publicly traded companies such as ours, in engaging in fraudulence accounting and financial practices. Such a scenario could have ruined the corporation 's reputation and expose it to an enormous fine from the Federal Trade Commission.
