CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
Education is not only for knowledge and skills but also character building
Aristotle
Education is society’s main avenue for the development of civic and social values, particularly a sense of humanity and nationhood. It is also a means for developing the individual’s coping capabilities which relate to values supportive of humanism, nationhood and development (Villar, 2003)

Lourdes Quisumbing (2005) pointed out that “national progress in this country is hampered not so much by resources constraints of deficiencies in technical managerial expertise but them but by the crisis in value formation and characters development. She stressed further, that the educational system’s thrust is to inculcate values in youth. Social transformation towards a truly free society and a stable democracy cannot take place without a change in the individual’.
Students starting out in college or a career need to be well prepared. The transition from high school or the workforce to college can be a challenge for some students, especially those who are not aware of the expectations and requirements for entering college level coursework. Once admitted to a college, students may take a college placement test to identify the appropriate courses for the individual’s skill level.
Values in education aim for the development of the human person, committed to the building of a just and humane society and an independent democratic nation. Values is a subjective terms. It can mean different thing to different people. Everything that one does has a values. It is either positive/negative/ undesirable value. ohn Gatto, the author of the essay “Against School”, censures the problem of the American Educational System in his essay. Gatto argues and questions to readers the demand of the school, which is the original problem of this essay. Gatto shows that some examples of the “success without schooling”, and he insists that historically forced schooling is not relating to intellectual and financial success. At the end part of his essay, he suggestion, and viewpoint about forced schooling; “We suppress our genius only because we haven’t yet figured out how to manage a population of educated men and women” (690).
“College in America” Caroline Bird thinks that a college education may not be the best choice for all high school students because college education does not bring about social equality, it does not benefit them financially, and it is not guaranteed that college will lead them to an elite profession. First of all, high school students are expected to bring about social equality through four rigorous years in college. However, college is an expensive way to categorize the highs and lows in society. It is pressuring to younger students to pursue a higher education that only a few could achieve, and is also difficult for them to established an identity in society. Second, a college education does not benefit the youth financially because it is
In the “Against Schools” article, author John Gatto describes the modern day schooling system and its flaws. He uses several rhetorical strategies in trying to prove his point. He successfully uses all three types of rhetoric in writing this article, which includes ethos, pathos, and logos. He establishes these strategies very early, and often throughout the article. He believes one issues with today’s schooling system is boredom, and that there is a distinct difference between what it means to be educated and schooled.
Schools regularly have many external professionals who work with them, and these can include: educational psychologists; speech and language therapists; specialist teachers; Education Welfare Officers; School Improvement Partners; and physiotherapists/occupational therapists. An educational psychologist is assigned to a school and they work closely with SENCO providing pupil observations and assessments, helping to plan the provision for those with additional needs. A school will have links with speech and language therapists who can work with pupils to help with communication, language and speech problems.
In today’s world, the importance of a college diploma is more important than ever. Globalism has long since shrunk the world, and many jobs are becoming more and more automated. Good jobs are harder to get and positions are more competitive. College, however, is not cheap and many do not want to go through more school after high school. When Castro goes to college she notices most of the other student are either from an upper-class family or middle class, she realizes most do not understand her and she could not understand them very well either.
Explain how the ethos, mission, aims and values of a school may be reflected in working practices. The ethos, mission, aims and values of the school should be known very well before entering the school setting as it is part and parcel of the environment of the school and the daily practice of the staff and pupils there. All adults that work and are part of setting have the responsibility to model the standards of behaviour, with the children and amongst the colleagues. Good association and strong dealings between adults will encourage the good behaviour in children. All children as an individual should be respected within the school.
The best escalator to opportunity in America is schooling (Wendy 2012). According to an investigation from a magazine, this escalator is broken. They expect each generation to do better, but currently, much more young Americans have less access to education, about twenty-nine percent than their parents than have more education about twenty percent, and as recently as 2000, the United States still ranked second in the share of the population with a college degree, but now they have dropped to fifth (Borosage and Vanden 2011). A basic element of the American dream is the equal access to education as the lubricant of social and economic mobility. As we know, more and more children have not taken the opportunity so far because the society they live in cannot facilitate them to achieve their essential American

When we do pick vegetables from the land it’s very rarely enough for the whole family to be fed so my husband
How many times have you finished an exam only to forget the answers a couple of hours later? Did you have that knowledge in your mind? How many equations, dates or vocabulary have you memorized just before an exam and never use again? Education plays a vital role in shaping the future.
She discusses how students' academics, health, and economic contributions are affected by the unreachable standards society sets for them and that we have to be the ones to turn it around. Ramsey provides the audience with ideas on how to make a difference for the generations to come, like to educate on body confidence, to be better role models, and to work together to change the culture. It is on us, the current generations, to start making changes now so that the generations to come will be happy and confident in
Education can be explained as the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits, and is the most valuable resource that one could have in life as, firstly, education facilitates learning and critical thinking, secondly, it allows for dreams of the future in terms of success to become a reality and lastly, it prevents the children of today from risking their future due to the influence of environmental hazards (Brooks, 2006). After studying the points discussed, it can be said that education plays an important role in the development of each and every human being and is not on categorized under scholarly education but rather any experience that allows an individual to broaden his/her knowledge. Amy Gutmann, an American political theorist proposed a theory surrounded around the democratic state of education requiring parents and states - to surrender some educational authority to professional education staffs’, also indicating that the children of today do not just benefit from freedom of choice, or identification with and participation in the positive aspects of their family and political aspects of the society. Amy’s theory is based on the characterisation of the three models of educational control namely Locke’s Theory of Parental control,
The two important values that I have learnt are the independence and the respect. I learnt these two values since my childhood. One of the values is the independence. Independence means that you can support yourself without owning or depending on yourself concerned with livelihood or studying. You can make decision of your life without being controlled by the others.
Education is a huge issue that not only affects kids and their parents, but their community as well. Schools teach young kids to become the next generation of engineers, technicians, and political leaders, working towards creating a better future for their country and their community. Teachers have the unique job of creating the future leaders of the world, and preparing them for both college and life beyond, by putting a special push towards math and science, the so-called “foundation” of our society. The hard truth is, no one can be anything they want to be. Some people are simply not cut out to be engineers, doctors, or psychologists.
Malcolm X once said “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepared for it today.” In the western world education plays a vital role in shaping our future; it determines if we will survive or fail in the world we created for ourselves. Our world is constantly changing and it requires a society that is well versed in understanding the problems deriving from cultural differences and tolerance of one another’s beliefs and perceptions. With the power of education we are able to deal with the problems of economic, government, religion and culture differences.
