Weight Training in Sports The value placed on winning when it comes to sports has increased throughout the years. The ferocious amount of excessive training – as well as the enlarged amount of money being spent in athletics has proven to emphasize the winning mentality instilled in adolescents. The adolescents are exploited due to their potential by sacrificing their well-beings in order to be equal to “the guys in the NFL” (Cole & Paidoussi). As a result, coaches and athletes take drastic measures in order to improve performance. But can athletic performance be improved through the specific type of training program? Carbohydrates help to fuel the body during high intensity exercise, while proteins help to regulate metabolism, and fats help to reserve energy. Micronutrients consist of water soluble vitamins, fat soluble vitamins, minerals, and water and overall, help to release energy in food, build and maintain body tissues, helps the development of the nervous system, helps proper growth and development of the nervous system, helps to form growth hormones, helps to build DNA and protein, vision/healthy skin/healthy hair, as well as promotes strong teeth and bones, prevents damage to cell membranes, aids in blood clotting, maintains teeth and bones, regulates water balance in cells, forms blood cells, aids in transport of CO2, and helps to moisten tissues such as those in the mouth, eyes, and nose. This is a clear sign of a weakened cardiovascular system. In order to improve heart health, cardiovascular endurance must be developed. Muscles weaken due to illness, injury, poor nutrition and this is measured through muscular endurance which is “…your muscles’ ability to resist fatigue” (Brown, 2016). In order to improve muscular endurance, strength – training activities should be performed. An example would be to build endurance in biceps with bicep curls using weights.
