Let the members of the 4th estate do their work
World Press Day celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom. It was created to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. The Press plays an important role of conveying political, social and economic related information to citizens. Citizens are interested in service delivery issues in education, water and health but also on governance and the economy. Moreover, access to timely and quality information is their constitutional right. A recent access to information opinion survey by Twaweza East Africa through its Sauti za Wananchi mobile

According to a study done by the Working Group on the Media more than 50 percent of the 282 participating journalists had received threats more than once in their working life, which, according to the same study, was "a confirmation that journalists are increasingly working in a hostile environment in Kenya." At least 27 percent of the journalists said they receive several threats a month, while at least 62 percent said they have received at least one threat every …show more content…
Media owners to facilitate journalists to practice good journalism, respect the independence of the newsroom, promote and defend the right to press freedom and freedom of expression. Further, to allow a diversity of views on their media platforms and honor the public interest mission of
I, personally, am a big proponent of day reporting centers but perhaps this is because I would rather, when at all possible, focus on rehabilitation to reduce recidivism than continue to increase the prison population beyond its means. Day reporting centers are nonresidential facilities designed to provide an offender on parole or probation with the resources and supervision necessary to meet the conditions of his or her sentencing. Typically, day centers are open five days a week in the afternoon and evening hours and are staffed with probation officers, volunteers, counselors, and treatment specialist (Allen, Latessa, and Ponder 120). The main purpose of day reporting centers is to offer the offender all the services required of him or her
2. With media coverage becoming very competitive, were the journalists made to put themselves into dangerous positions to be relevant on the news media front? If they didn’t risk themselves for the information would people get the information they needed to know during a time of chaos. 3. The news that’s being targeted is more personal and risqué than it used to be.
In the years since the SHES massacre, many of the victims’ families and others involved in the shooting have received harassment. The father of the youngest victim, Leonard Pozner, and his family “received hate-filled calls and violent emails from people who say they know the shooting was a hoax” (Demick). Recently, several people have been arrested due to their harassment, such as a woman in Florida who was arrested with “making death threats against Pozner, with repeated phone calls to his home in which she muttered ethnic and racial slurs and profanities” (Demick). These instances of harassment contradict the statistic that belief in the conspiracy theories has decreased. In the most recent survey conducted by PublicMind in 2016, only eight percent of those surveyed agree that the government was involved in the SHES shooting (Cassino).
It is often argued that the existence of a democratic society necessitates the existence of information outlets whose duty is to provide the populace with authentic, unbiased and relevant material. Media outlets are thus the most pivotal institutions within society. The obligation of the modern media and its journalists to perform sufficiently as the "fourth estate of democracy" - that is, the vital pillar in maintaining social equality - arguably stopped being fulfilled when media became privately owned. In recent years, rhetoric has triumphed over reality and the general public seem to remain unaware. Owned by media monopolist Rupert Murdoch, popular newspaper "The Courier Mail" is perhaps one of the most biased outlets of all popular newspapers.
Veterans Day Veterans Day is an official holiday we celebrate on November 11th, we celebrate all those living and dead who served in the US armed forces. The formal name of Veterans day was Armistice day and was changed to Veteran’s day by President Eisenhower in 1954. The first Veterans day celebrated was on November 11th 1919, a year after World War I ended. Veterans day started when there was an agreement signed in 1918 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to end World War I. Veteran’s Day is often confused with Memorial day but Memorial day is honoring the past military and Veteran’s day honors all, living and dead.
The purpose of this paper will be to present a detailed analyzation of a newspaper article found on The Toronto Star website, titled: "Las Vegas gunman researched SWAT tactics, carefully planned out attack - but motive is a mystery: police" written by Ken Ritter. A major observation I made in this article is the attempt at instilling shock into the public in order to incite fear. This observation was made by assessing the signs, metaphors, and the overall format of the article and the manner of which is was written. There are many signs in this article that serve their purpose of inciting fear and shock in the public reader. To begin this analysis, the most prominent signifiers will be discussed along with what they signify.
Whether it’s just trying to get the information out there or trying to prevent these situations, news reporters make society uneasy because of the information they are putting out into the world
Show Day Show day is the day that brings me so much excitement. Do you show any livestock or raise animals? If you do, I bet you know what I mean. It gives you so much joy, love, nervousness, and passion!
In 2014 an African American teenager named Michael Brown, was shot in Ferguson, Missouri. Now with a white police officer killing an unarmed black teenager, the media was all over the case. MSNBC and NBP used members of the Ku Klux Klan and the New Black Panthers to create more friction between races by using the two groups as generalizing how black and white Americans think. This another prime example in recent years showing how media continues to promote racial tension and get a rise out of people, especially by using white police officers that shot and killed
The media will pick and choose which topics to discuss according to the viewer’s ratings. The news media represent the news in a manner that will leave people coming back for more. They choose carefully what they want to report and by doing so they do not spread lies within the articles but what they choose not to tell the audience. The media shares what the people
Good morning/afternoon Miss Kelly and class. Australia Day is one of the most celebrated public holidays in Australia. It’s a day to call over mates for a game of cricket and eat lamb on a ‘barbie’. What better way to convey and persuade this idea than airing it on national television?
The phenomena of impartiality and objectivity are the most popular objects for discussion in the circles of journalists and media experts nowadays. There is controversy whether these theoretical concepts have practical application and whether they are essential elements of modern journalism. In this case it is significant to understand what elements of impartiality are topical for contemporaneity and whether there is a need to strive for impartiality at all. First of all, it is important to understand the meaning of the word «impartiality».
Police brutality is a term that defines violence against humanity by law enforcement officers. Police Officers encounter hostile situations on the daily basis forcing them to make instant decisions in order to make an arrest or protect themselves. However some police officers do not hesitate to refer to violence immediately. The use of excessive force against a civilian could or could not be voluntary but should be evaluate by both law enforcement and the public. Over the past couple of years, police actions particularly police brutality, have raise awareness among communities.
A media source which ignores or censors important issues and events severely damages freedom of information. Many modern tabloids, twenty four hour news channels and other mainstream media sources have increasingly been criticized for not conforming to general standards of journalistic integrity. In nations described as authoritarian by most international think-tanks and NGOs media ownership is generally something very close to the complete state control over information in direct or indirect ways. Undesirable consequences which occur due to media imperialism are: • Commercially driven ultra-powerful mass market media is primarily loyal to sponsors i.e. advertisers and government rather than to the public interest.
But the positive interaction of government-press-society does not mean that each party must lose the function of its functional idealism. For if each existence is not approached with independent and interdependent responsibilities and obligations, it can be ascertained that each party will not be able to assume its rights and responsibilities. It means that the government should be given authority, as an authorized and responsible body to regulate the interests and spheres of its citizens. The press must remain authorized to carry out its distinctive social control functions.
