The painting that I chose to analyze was William Maw Egley’s Omnibus Life in London (1859). Painted on an oil medium, it depicts a scene of an omnibus, a horse-drawn carriage that acted as public transportation, pulled over at a certain stop along a particular route (Tate). In the painting, it features a crowded bus as more people attempt to board it. There are various people from every type of social class, which will be examined during the contextual analysis section to interpret the meaning historically. The man’s gaze gives us implied lines that lead us back to the main focus of the painting, the woman. The artist also uses light and dark to guide our eyes to the important parts of the artwork. Most of the artwork is dark, while the woman and the man looking at her are in the light.
This painting takes place on an unprimed canvas. The overall composition is a combination of calming colors. The gestures however seem to tell a different story. There is a contrast of colors and shapes. It can be argued that the colors are feminine while the gestures are masculine.

“The Open Window” is an oil painting by Henri Matisse made in the summer of 1905. It is a perfect example of the new art current which inspired French Art at the beginning of the century known as Fauvism. It represents the view from the window of the hotel’s room in Collioure in which the artist stayed. It is a small painting with sizes 55.3 x 46 cm, but it contains explosive and bright colors. Matisse has portrayed the scene in an inviting and light-filled way and with a large variety of tones and colors used to paint the boats floating on the calm sea and the sky during the sunset.
Although she painted this artwork in the 1940s, which was not the period of Post-Impressionist, her painting was very much similar to those of Post-Impressionist. One key idea of the Post-Impressionist is that symbolic and highly personal meanings were very important. Georgette Chen did not paint Eugene Chen in a professional setting or him in a stiff pose, but rather of Eugene Chen sitting on an old bamboo chair which was common in every household at that time. Eugene Chen was also painted sitting on the edge of the chair, and not in an unnatural position. Hence, this made the painting see more personal, which is similar to the style of Post-Impressionist.
The portrait represents the beauty of the time period. It holds simplistic colors with detailed shading. The artwork is very intriguing to me. I love the detail in the background, there are tiny brushstrokes that makes up the mountains and sky. Also, I find the shading of the mouth and eyes very interesting.
