Everyday a dental office is opened, many diseases can be transmitted. Every time a patient is treated, diseases can be transmitted. In the dental office, many precautious must be followed through. This can prevent a lot of chaos with the dental office and the patients’ health and future. First and foremost, every patient is treated as if they are contaminated. Some individuals may be ashamed of letting anyone know about a disease that may have. Also, some individuals may not know that they are infected. Furthermore, precautions are taken while procedures are conducted. Wearing the proper PPE is highly recommended in every office to protect the patient and the dental team. After procedures are finished, materials should be taken to the sterilization area to prevent any transmittable diseases. Always remind yourself, when in doubt re-glove. Using to many gloves is better than being unsure and causing harm to yourself or the patient. These helpful tips can also prevent malpractice, lawsuits and negligence, suspension or having your license revoked. The smallest mistakes can lead to a greater amount of problems in the dental office. …show more content…
If a dental assistant/dentist/hygienist use the same gloves from patient to patient, it can cause decontamination. Also, improper decontamination can occur when a barrier is punctured and not replaced. That can allow bacteria to enter a confined area. If the barrier isn’t removed and the area is not re sanitized, the next patient or the dental team can become infected. When putting on PPE, decontamination can occur when the dental assistant touches any part of their body with clean gloves. By not removing those gloves or rewashing/sanitizing their hands, bacteria can enter the patient mouth. Not wearing the proper PPE such as a lab jacket, gloves, glasses and a face mask can cause you to become high risk with being in contact with any type of
d) Setting out procedures When setting out for procedure its done in two stages in our practice. First is initial setting of the instruments and materials before patient enter room. All (chair, spittoon, work tops...) is wipe down with disinfectant wipes and then set up instrument tray with some cotton wool rolls, articulation paper and 3 in 1 tip on little table on the side the chair handy for clinician. This table is moveable and can be set in desirable position. Hand pieces and local anaesthetic syringe with needle are place on the stationary table in the reach of clinical in the case she may need them.
14.Both. They can help with reconstruction later. 15.Bloodborne pathogens 16.You should wear neoprene gloves for bases and polyvinyl chloride gloves for oils. 17.This is when you are required to treat all blood or bodily fluids as if they are infected.
According to the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry, these assignments are unauthorized by a Dental Hygienist and a dentist may not delegate these duties to a dental hygienist. These tasks should be performed only by a licensed dentist. Furthermore, at the end of the visit you were absent, thus failed to discuss relevant information related to the treatment or plan of care. I have left your office with a treatment plan and you ultimately failed to ensure that I understood the dental
A quote by James Gibson, UCLA’s director of environmental health and safety, describes how difficult it is to emphasize how important lab rules are (Doc A). In 2009, a geneticist named Malcolm Casadaban, died from an infection not thought to infect adults. The researcher was known for not wearing his gloves in the lab which was most likely his cause for infection and death (Doc B). This man was probably always taught the same rules and not warned about what could happen if he did not wear gloves. If he was taught the proper way maybe he would not have died that
When working with the public, it is very important that one takes their personal hygiene and grooming care seriously. Maintaining a personal hygiene schedule is important. Showering regularly, maintain oral health, use of deodorant, keeping hair clean, keeping facial hair trimmed these are all good personal hygiene habits. Oral hygiene is especially important to those who work in the dental field. Brushing and flossing is not only good for the health of the teeth but it is a good way to prevent bad breath.
It is necessary to eliminate the possibility of contamination of the starting materials and/or products of other materials and products. Increased risk of accidental cross-contamination contributes to the uncontrolled spread of dust, gases, vapours, aerosols or micro-organisms present in the materials and products, equipment, and clothing (Coyle, et.al, 2004, 179-186). The degree of risk depends on the type of contamination and product exposed to contamination. The most dangerous pollutants are sensitizing substances, biological preparations containing living organisms, certain hormones, cytotoxics and potent substances (Pye & Blott, 2009, 170-181). Contamination is particularly dangerous for drugs used for injection or for the treatment of open wounds and also intended for prolonged use and/or receiving high doses.
Louis, I like that you addressed how our roll as dental hygienists is essential to the education and preventative treatment provided to patients. A major part of what we do for our patients is counsel and teach them appropriate oral hygiene strategies in hopes of encouraging the patient maintain their oral health.
After reading Million Dollar Dentistry by Gray Kadi, I learned that the traditional way of dentistry practice is stressful and you are leaving so much money on the table if you continue to practice dentistry the old fashion way. Also I learned that if you use Mr. Kadi suggestion you will be living a happier and stress-free life. One of the biggest take-away I got after reading this book is “when everyone is responsible for everything, no one is truly responsible for anything.” I really like this concept, it gives everyone in their roles accountability and incentives to bring in new/returning patients. For example, the treatment coordinator he/she is responsible for closing the case after the patient comes out of hygiene.
Appropriate PPE consists of gloves, masks, eye protection, gowns other protective clothing that prevents blood and other fluids from making contact with any part of the employee. Employers must ensure the use of PPE as well as its removal and placement into designated areas prior to leaving the work place. 4. Housekeeping requirements: Employers are to maintain a clean and sanitized worksite by implementing a written schedule for cleaning and decontaminating all surfaces and equipment, in addition to any following contact with potentially infectious materials. The schedule is to include all containers which are likely to become contaminated as well.
Officers will be provided with body armor which is to be work=n at all times the officer is on duty. Most PPE is disposable, however used equipment must be disposed of properly. When PPE is removed it is to be placed in a designated area for storage, decontamination, or disposal. If contaminated with bodily fluid of unknown substance, the item must be placed in a plastic bag and sealed. A bio-hazard sticker is to be placed on the outside.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE MEASURES Personal protective measures (PPM) , should be taken while treating patients, most of the patient reporting dental clinic may not be aware of the disease present in them . So the dentist while treating these type of patients can get infected easily . PPE provides a barrier between the worker and the hazard. It can only prevent exposure to blood or other body fluids, but it cannot protect workers from sharps and needle stick injuries. Thus PPM is very important while treating dental patients .
Organisms present on the patient’s skin, or that has been shed onto inanimate objects in close vicinity to the patient, gets transferred to the hands of healthcare personnel. These organisms are capable of surviving for at least several minutes on the hands of personnel. Next, handwashing or hand antisepsis by the personnel may be inadequate or absent entirely, or the means used for hand hygiene may be inappropriate. Finally, the contaminated hands of the care giver comes in direct contact with another patient, or with an inanimate object that comes into direct contact with the patient. Healthcare associated infections can be transmitted not only from infected or draining wounds, but also from frequently colonized areas of normal, intact patient skin.[4]
When dealing with patients, doctor or nurse must use personal protective equipment to prevent infection. In conclusion, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most dangerous bacterial outbreak that hospital must be aware about how to deal with
