Singapore have been doing well for the past decades, evolving from a developing nation when it first gained independence in 1965, to first world status towards the end of 20th century and have been listed as one of the most livable country in the world. In the next 10 years to come, not only do we have to keep up with our development as a nation, there are also some areas which may possibly be improved to further increase the standard of living for all. Firstly, improvements to the public transport system could be made to reduce the usage of private vehicles to make Singapore a greener city. Last year, result tabulated that 126 seniors aged 60 and above committed suicide, this have increased by nearly 60% from 79 seniors in 2000. The supposingly golden years of one’s life were now filled with pain and struggle, and turning to suicide have became the only way to end it. The high living cost in Singapore is believed to be the main reason for the suicides rate over the years. Younger generation have to devote most of their day working, in order to sustain their family, so there is insufficient time for them to spend, for accompanying the elderly to care for their needs and wants. Furthermore, health care is still expansive despite pioneer generation package and subsidies been brought up in recent years. Loneliness and sense of financial burden to the family in some seniors have resulted in them taking their own life. The government should have increased subsidies for the retirees so that they could pay up for their own health care and daily necessities. In this decade, Americans see significant changes in society, and are known as a decade of improvement in the standard of living.
Many patients are afraid that their illness will cause them to become incapable of living independently, that they will eventually become a burden on their family. In a longitudinal case study designed to show the motivations for physician-assisted suicide, the result shows the main categories of motivation are illness-related experiences, changes in the person 's sense of self, and fears about the future (Pealman et.al). These patients will most likely suffer even more from their mental stress that they will become financially dependent on their family. As patients suffer through physical illness, their lives will be changed dramatically. It reasonable to see how a person will become hopeless about future after a great change in life.
The result shows that 46 or 92% of the elderlies wished that they had more respect to themselves. Forty or 80% of them said that they sometimes pity themselves while 34 or 68% of them perceived that they have little or sometimes nothing to help their family and friends. In addition, 33 or 66% of elderlies said that they are not happy with their accomplishments in life while 32 or 64% of them perceived that they do not have capabilities and good qualities that they can be proud of and shared that they find it difficult to accept the changes happening in themselves at the present moment. The process of aging in not an unfamiliar topic to society and is an inevitable phase of life. Since 2011, the number of older individuals are increasing annually particularly those from the baby boomer generation. The life expectancy has been increasing with people living longer thanks to modern medicine. These occurrences are proof that civilization is growing exponentially, however the process of aging also means that the older individuals are facing dilemmas such as decreased physical functions, financial instability from retirement, and abuse. Even older adults who are independent may face some limitations.

Target Participants The target participants of this questionnaire are caregivers of dementia sufferers. A total of 200 caregivers caring for dementia sufferers will be recruited from the pool of family members accompanying dementia sufferers when they visit geriatric clinics for routine consultations. There’s many opportunities in the world to still live by and there’s local services and programs to help out the teens, adults and even elderly people from suicide prevention. Life is tough and I know we all go to ups and downs, but we need to agree that suicide isn’t the answer to ending our lives and we need to change it. There are 175 countries in the world right now (Countries). The United States is ranked 48th in suicides. An alarming total of 44,193 people commits suicide here, each year (List). It’s daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, friends, and coworkers taking their life. It’s everyday people taking their life.

On average, one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds somewhere in the world. Global suicide rates have increased 60% in the past 45 years. According to Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre, for the elderly over 65 years old, although the suicide rate of elderly suicide has declined from over 35 during Year 1985-1995 (in every 100 thousand) persons to 22.8 (in every 100 thousand) in the year 2013, the rate was still the highest among other age groups in Hong Kong.
