The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched a two-year initiative in 2008 to take action in order to assess and transform the needs for the nursing profession. They looked into the nurse’s responsibilities, roles, background, and education levels to foresee the future of the nursing profession, where they developed four key messages of recommendations. The curriculum at WGU was very challenging, nonetheless it prepared me to become a safe and effective nurse. The BSN curriculum provided avenues to keep me up to date with safe practices and learn how to master therapeutic communication. WGU also helped me sharpen my critical thinking skills in order to make decisions quickly and provide safe and effective care to patients. Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) has grown in the past years and continuation of its growth is expected. Studies show that there are some difficulties that a novice nurse experience as they transition to APRN. (Hill, L. *& Sawatzky, J. 2011). Additionally, they encourage research to advance nursing education through evidence-based teaching practices, and the instruction of nurses (NLN, 2013). The NLN role in Nursing Excellence is to influence public policy on nursing by providing backing for education with the expectation of excellence through growth, improvement, and understanding (NLN, 2013). The transition from an Associate Degree (AD) nurse to a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a rewarding time during a nurse’s career. There are many reasons why nurses return to college to get their BSN degree. Some return to meet a personal goal others return for professional advancement or are mandated by their employer to do so. Over the past few years many organizations stopped hiring AD nurses or drastically reduced the number they hire. Many AD nurses who delayed returning to school regret not doing so sooner when they realize the wealth of knowledge gained from getting their BSN degree.

According to the Grand Canyon University College of Nursing Philosophy “the nursing education is built upon theories and research. Baccalaureate nursing practice incorporates the roles of assessing, critical thinking, communicating, providing care, teaching, and leading” ("Nursing Philosophy," 2011). In the event of a nursing care or patient situation, the ADN uses the procedures and steps learned to correctly evaluate the patient condition as exactly a BSN would do in the same situation. The difference starts with the BSN utilizing the critical thinking, management, leadership and decision making skill set to think beyond the clinical condition of the patient. This may not be limited to legal, management, social, human caring and the client relationship.
I am deciding to apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison because I am intrigued by the opportunities the university has to offer. During my time at UW-Madison I hope to participate in intramural sports, get a job, receive an excellent education, and much more. The city life offers a diverse culture and allows you to learn about and to appreciate life. As I want to be a part of the nursing program I would utilize the opportunity to work at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and to work alongside other students trying to achieve the same goal as I am.
