Transcendentalism, the belief in the inherent goodness of people and nature, greatly coincides with the 2015 film, In the Heart of the Sea ("Transcendentalism"). In the Heart of the Sea is a book turned film, which was directed by Ron Howard and based off of the book written by Nathaniel Philbrick. In the story, there is a strong theme of man vs. nature as men go out to hunt whales, but end up being hunted themselves, and end up getting a good sense of nature by struggling to survive and realising that the whale is just another living thing that is also just trying to survive.
In the beginning of the story, a crew of whalers go out to hunt whales, but their luck runs out when the whale comes and hunts them. The crew had boarded the boat known as the Essex in Nantucket, Massachusetts to go and hunt whales for whale oil. They were

At one point in the story, the whale had surfaced the water, giving the men a chance to kill it. The whale had been hunting them for quite some time at this point, and found itself in a very vulnerable position, to where Owen had the chance to kill it. The men had yelled at Chase: "Mr. Chase. They have the best location. It 's just a whale"(Leavitt). They wanted him to kill the whale, since it has caused them great tragedy and suffering throughout the past months. They waited for him to throw the spear at it and kill it. They continued yelling at him: "Kill it! He 's right there! Throw the spear"(Leavitt)! Even with this pressure on him, Chase refused to throw it and kill the whale. He knew that it did not wish to be killed, and had attacked them to try and avoid harm. It was a battle for survival, and he now knew why the whale had taken action as it did. This whale encounter made Owen Chase realize that it was just a part of nature, and that nothing that he could do would change
Most teenagers complain about not having enough freedom. To be able to sit and eat ice cream out of the box at ten in the morning for breakfast or blast their favorite music as loud as possible. For most, college provides that, opening its campus to their students with gates of gold granting young adults the freedom that they dream about. Unfortunately, a new danger that once was cloaked from young minds is being revealed, making this freedom less obtainable. That danger is rape.
To some this in an unneeded, extraneous line in the story that adds no real substance. To others, this provides insight into the characters of Nurse Ratched and Mr. McMurphy. The white whale refers to Moby Dick by Herman Melville. In Moby Dick, the whale wreaks havoc and is relentlessly pursued by Captain Ahab. In the end it can be argued that Moby, the whale, and the Captain are both defeated, paralleling the story with Nurse Ratched and Mr. McMurphy.
This essay will examine the functions and effects of cinematography in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws Jaws follows the police chief Brody, along with scientist Hooper and shark hunter Quint, in their attempt to protect the town of Amity against a Great White shark that is terrorising beachgoers. It was adapted from Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel of the same name. Following its release in summer 1975, Jaws became the highest grossing film As Jaws was one of the first motion pictures to be shot partially on water, the production came across issues with the prosthetic shark, and as a result, Spielberg decided to only suggest the appearance of the shark as often as possible, as opposed to showing the prosthetic body during attacks. This sparing use of the prosthetic, and primary focus instead on creating suspense and dread without the shark visibly present, proved to be an inspired decision, as Jaws is considered a pioneering achievement in the horror genre.
It is a common misconception of natural instinct and imaginative onlookers; these whales are not people they are wild marine life. It is no secret that killer whales have a bad reputation, however what earned the reputation was sheer unintentional killings. Orinus Orcas are wild marine life that should not be prosecuted like human beings, and the name “Killer Whales” is the result of false
Crutcher definitely got his point across with the seriousness of all these matters. A lot of times we read books, and they don’t really mean anything to us, but Whale Talk was different. I think it leaves a strong impact on anyone who decides to read this novel. I feel that it also gives us a reality check on how to treat others which alot of us do not think twice
Whale sharks like to hang out together and eat together. Now you know about whale sharks.
Jack brings up the topic about the beast at an assembly, and makes the little’uns fear the beastie even more. " Bollocks to the rules! We 're strong - we hunt! If there 's a beast, we 'll hunt it down! We 'll close in and beat and beat and beat-" (p.114) once again jack is sepaking of thr beast again, he is convincing the boys that there absolutely is a beast and that he can protect them by hunting it.
Here it becomes clear that Jack is irresponsible because he let his only chance of getting off the island die out and choose to hunt for boars. Irresponsibility
These whales are unpredictable and dangerous because they are aggravated as shown in the film; they need to be kept free in the wild. We can either stop capturing and training whales, or people will continue to be injured and even killed. This is an example of the either/or logical fallacy, and it is proven in the film. The documentary, Blackfish, is jam packed full of arguments
The shark represents man vs nature throughout the whole story up until the end. From the very beginning of both the film and novel, it starts off looking through the shark’s perspective. The novel’s intro gives some exposition about sharks, including one important definition about anoxia: “Once, if ever, it stopped, it would sink to the bottom of the ocean and die of anoxia” (Benchley 3). This definition not only acts as exposition, but also foreshadows how the shark eventually dies in the end of the novel. After the expository phase of both the movie and novel, the shark attacks its first victim--a drunk woman named Crissy.
Ahab’s main goal for going on the whaling ship is to kill the whale, Moby Dick. Roger Chillingworth and Captain Ahab are both evil characters with many differences.
“A long time ago, my ancestor Paikea came to this place on the back of a whale. Since then, in every generation of my family, the first born son has carried his name and become the leader of our tribe... until now” (Caro & Sanders, 2003). Whale Rider is the story of a girl, Pai, whose twin brother and mother die in child birth. Koro, Pai’s grandfather and leader of the Maori tribe, is devastated that their future leader has died. Years later Koro is determined to find a leader and begins to teach and train the boys, in which Pai is not allowed to join because she is a girl.
However, Jack and his tribe are eager to hunt Ralph down. In this final scene, it is clear that savagery completely took over civilization on the island. “Fun and games,” said the officer. (Golding, 181). The naval officer correctly identified the hunt, because the boys allowed the inner evil dominate themselves.
There are many whales in the sea, but this particular whale called Moby Dick is the desirable catch for the whalers and captain due to its legendary proportions. In the novel, Moby Dick, it offers an allegorical story of humanity’s dangerous search for meaning. The monstrous, white whale represents that “meaning” humans have been hunting for their entire lives, but at the end one will discover that one can do so much but still end up not finding their answer. The entire plot to Moby Dick is directed towards the final confrontation between Ahab, his crewman and the White whale. At the end, the whale wins the fight and the rest of the crew on ship all die, demonstrating the fact that the whale cannot be defeated, hence signaling how the laws
